Non-Blood Specimen Collection for Pathology Analysis Training

SAQA US 252399 | NQF 4 | Credits 6 | Duration 3 Days
From $967 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the competencies required to collect non-blood specimens, such as urine, stool, sputum, and swabs, for medical pathology analysis. It focuses on correct collection techniques, patient preparation, infection control, and specimen handling to ensure accurate diagnostic results.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply correct procedures for collecting non-blood specimens including urine, stool, sputum, and swabs.
  • Demonstrate proper patient preparation, identification, and labelling techniques for specimen collection.
  • Implement infection prevention and control measures during specimen collection and handling.
  • Evaluate specimen quality and identify factors that may compromise diagnostic accuracy.
  • Document specimen collection details accurately in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Handle, store, and transport non-blood specimens safely and in compliance with legal and ethical requirements.

Target Audience

This course is designed for healthcare workers, nursing staff, phlebotomists, and laboratory assistants who are responsible for collecting non-blood specimens in clinical or laboratory settings.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Non-Blood Specimen Collection

Objectives:
• Understand the principles and importance of non-blood specimen collection in pathology.
• Identify different types of non-blood specimens and their clinical applications.
• Describe pre-analytical variables affecting specimen quality.
• Apply infection control and safety measures during collection.
• Demonstrate correct labelling and documentation procedures.

Topics:
• Overview of non-blood specimens: urine, stool, sputum, swabs, tissue, body fluids.
• Pre-analytical factors: patient preparation, timing, storage conditions.
• Infection prevention and control: standard precautions, waste management.
• Equipment and consumables: containers, transport media, swabs.
• Labelling, requisition forms, and chain of custody.
• Legal and ethical considerations in specimen collection.
• Communication with patients and healthcare team.
• Quality assurance in specimen handling.

Day 2: Collection Techniques for Specific Specimen Types

Objectives:
• Perform collection techniques for urine, stool, and sputum specimens.
• Perform collection techniques for wound, throat, and nasal swabs.
• Collect and handle tissue specimens and body fluids.
• Apply appropriate transport and storage conditions for each specimen type.
• Troubleshoot common collection problems.

Topics:
• Urine collection: mid-stream, clean catch, catheter, 24-hour.
• Stool collection: direct, occult blood, culture swab.
• Sputum collection: spontaneous, induced, bronchoscopy.
• Swab collection: wound, throat, nasal, perianal.
• Tissue and biopsy handling: fixation, transport media.
• Body fluid collection: pleural, peritoneal, synovial, CSF.
• Transport and storage: temperature, time limits, preservatives.
• Problem-solving: insufficient volume, contamination, patient refusal.

Day 3: Quality Assurance, Special Considerations, and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Implement quality control measures in non-blood specimen collection.
• Adapt collection techniques for special populations (paediatric, elderly, immunocompromised).
• Identify and manage specimen rejection criteria.
• Integrate knowledge and skills in simulated scenarios.
• Prepare for competency assessment.

Topics:
• Quality control: internal and external QC, proficiency testing.
• Special populations: children, elderly, patients with disabilities.
• Specimen rejection: causes, documentation, corrective actions.
• Point-of-care testing for non-blood specimens.
• Emerging technologies: self-collection kits, molecular diagnostics.
• Role of the collector in the diagnostic process.
• Review of course content and Q&A.
• Written and practical competency assessment.

Practicals

10 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practice sessions enable learners to apply collection techniques under supervision, using mannequins and simulated specimens. Learners demonstrate correct procedure, infection control, labelling, and troubleshooting.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Urine and Stool Collection — Learners practice mid-stream urine collection and stool specimen collection on mannequins, including labelling and documentation. (3h)
  • Practical 2: Swab Collection Techniques — Learners practice wound, throat, and nasal swab collection on mannequins, using appropriate transport media. (3h)
  • Practical 3: Sputum and Tissue Handling — Learners practice sputum induction and collection, and simulate tissue specimen handling and fixation. (2h)
  • Practical 4: Integrated Scenario and Troubleshooting — Learners participate in simulated scenarios involving multiple specimen types, problem-solving, and quality assurance checks. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
