Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Patient-Centred Information Provision

Objectives:
• Understand the ethical and legal frameworks for providing information to patients and carers.
• Identify the principles of informed consent and shared decision-making.
• Recognise barriers to effective communication in healthcare settings.
• Explore the role of cultural competence in information exchange.

Topics:
• Ethical principles: autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice.
• Legal requirements: National Health Act, Patients' Rights Charter.
• Informed consent process and capacity assessment.
• Communication barriers: language, literacy, emotional state.
• Cultural sensitivity and diversity considerations.
• Introduction to shared decision-making models.

Day 2: Communication Skills for Effective Information Exchange

Objectives:
• Demonstrate active listening and empathetic communication techniques.
• Apply plain language principles to explain complex medical information.
• Use teach-back and chunk-and-check methods to verify understanding.
• Adapt communication style to patient and carer needs.

Topics:
• Active listening: paraphrasing, reflecting, summarising.
• Empathy and building trust.
• Plain language guidelines for health information.
• Teach-back method: steps and practice.
• Chunk-and-check technique.
• Role-play scenarios: breaking bad news, discussing treatment options.
• Adjusting communication for visual, hearing, or cognitive impairments.

Day 3: Information Content and Decision-Support Tools

Objectives:
• Determine the essential information patients and carers need for decision-making.
• Evaluate and use decision aids and patient education materials.
• Discuss risks, benefits, and alternatives in an understandable manner.
• Address emotional and psychological aspects of decision-making.

Topics:
• Key information elements: diagnosis, prognosis, treatment options, risks, benefits, alternatives.
• Decision aids: types, evidence base, and selection criteria.
• Evaluating readability and cultural appropriateness of materials.
• Numeracy and risk communication: absolute vs relative risk.
• Supporting patients with decisional conflict.
• Managing unrealistic expectations and misinformation.
• Involving carers: information needs and boundaries.

Day 4: Documentation, Handover, and Interprofessional Collaboration

Objectives:
• Document information provision and patient decisions accurately.
• Communicate effectively with the healthcare team about patient preferences.
• Collaborate with other professionals to ensure consistent information.
• Manage conflicts and ethical dilemmas in information sharing.

Topics:
• Documentation standards: SOAP, narrative, and electronic health records.
• Recording consent and decision-making capacity.
• Handover tools: ISBAR, SBAR.
• Interprofessional communication strategies.
• Role of the nurse in care coordination.
• Ethical dilemmas: confidentiality vs disclosure, family involvement.
• Case studies: resolving disagreements within the team.

Day 5: Integration, Assessment, and Quality Improvement

Objectives:
• Synthesise learning through simulated patient encounters.
• Evaluate personal communication skills and identify areas for improvement.
• Apply quality improvement principles to information provision processes.
• Develop an action plan for ongoing professional development.

Topics:
• Simulated scenarios: comprehensive information provision and decision support.
• Peer feedback and self-assessment using rubrics.
• Patient satisfaction and outcome measurement.
• Quality improvement tools: PDSA cycle, audits.
• Developing patient information resources as a team.
• Reflective practice and continuous learning.
• Final assessment: case-based oral or written examination.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
