Demonstrate Knowledge Of Fans Fan Measurements And Performance Training

SAQA US 120322 | NQF 4 | Credits 5 | Duration 2 Days
From $832 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to understand fan systems, perform accurate fan measurements, and evaluate fan performance in industrial and commercial settings. Participants will learn to apply relevant standards and calculations to ensure efficient and safe fan operation, supporting maintenance and energy optimization goals.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge of fan types, components, and operating principles.
  • Apply fan laws and performance curves to analyze system behavior.
  • Perform fan measurements including airflow, pressure, and speed using appropriate instruments.
  • Evaluate fan performance against design specifications and industry standards.
  • Identify common fan faults and recommend corrective actions.
  • Implement safe work practices during fan measurement and testing procedures.

Target Audience

This course is designed for maintenance technicians, mechanical engineers, and operations personnel responsible for the installation, testing, and performance monitoring of fans in industrial, mining, or HVAC environments.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Fans and Measurement Principles

Objectives:
• Understand the basic principles of fan operation and types of fans used in industry.
• Identify key parameters for fan performance measurement, including airflow, pressure, and power.
• Learn about measurement instruments and their calibration for accurate data collection.
• Apply basic calculations for fan performance metrics such as flow rate and static pressure.

Topics:
• Introduction to fan types: axial, centrifugal, and mixed flow fans.
• Fan laws and performance curves: understanding the relationship between speed, flow, pressure, and power.
• Measurement instruments: anemometers, manometers, tachometers, and power analysers.
• Setting up measurement points and ensuring safety during fan testing.
• Calculating airflow using velocity traverse methods.
• Determining static, dynamic, and total pressure in duct systems.
• Hands-on exercise: measuring fan performance parameters in a controlled environment.
• Data recording and error analysis for reliable measurements.

Day 2: Advanced Performance Evaluation and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Analyse fan performance curves and interpret system effects on fan operation.
• Evaluate fan efficiency and power consumption for energy optimisation.
• Conduct performance tests according to industry standards (e.g., ISO 5801).
• Troubleshoot common fan issues using measurement data and recommend corrective actions.

Topics:
• Detailed analysis of fan performance curves: fan curves vs. system curves.
• Impact of system design on fan performance: ductwork, dampers, and inlet/outlet conditions.
• Efficiency calculations: fan static efficiency, total efficiency, and specific power consumption.
• Standards for fan testing: ISO 5801 and AMCA 210 requirements.
• Practical performance test: setting up a fan test rig, conducting measurements, and plotting results.
• Troubleshooting: identifying causes of reduced flow, vibration, or noise from measurement data.
• Energy optimisation strategies: variable speed drives and fan selection for system matching.
• Case study: interpreting real-world fan performance data and recommending improvements.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 30%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 70%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
