This course provides learners with foundational knowledge of the macro structure, basic functions, and applied basic biophysics of all human body systems. It equips learners to understand how body systems interact and respond to biophysical principles, supporting roles in health, fitness, or medical support fields.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Human Body Systems and Basic Biophysics

Objectives:
• Define the macro structure of the human body and its major systems.
• Explain the basic functions of cells, tissues, and organs.
• Describe the principles of biophysics relevant to body function.
• Identify the levels of structural organisation in the human body.
• Apply basic biophysical concepts (e.g., diffusion, osmosis) to body systems.

Topics:
• Overview of the human body: anatomical position, directional terms, and body cavities.
• Levels of organisation: chemical, cellular, tissue, organ, system, organism.
• Basic biophysics: diffusion, osmosis, active transport, and membrane potentials.
• Introduction to the major body systems: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive.
• Homeostasis and feedback mechanisms.
• Practical activity: Microscopic observation of epithelial and connective tissues.

Day 2: Support and Movement Systems – Skeletal, Muscular, and Integumentary

Objectives:
• Describe the macro structure and functions of the skeletal system.
• Explain the role of joints and muscles in movement.
• Discuss the integumentary system's protective and regulatory functions.
• Apply biophysical principles to muscle contraction and bone strength.
• Identify common disorders of these systems.

Topics:
• Skeletal system: bone structure, classification, and functions (support, protection, mineral storage, blood cell production).
• Joints: types and movements.
• Muscular system: muscle types (skeletal, cardiac, smooth), contraction mechanism (sliding filament theory), and energy biophysics.
• Integumentary system: layers (epidermis, dermis, hypodermis), functions (protection, thermoregulation, sensation).
• Biophysics of lever systems in the body.
• Case study: Osteoporosis and muscular dystrophy.

Day 3: Control and Communication Systems – Nervous and Endocrine Systems

Objectives:
• Describe the macro structure and functions of the nervous system.
• Explain the endocrine system's role in hormone regulation.
• Understand biophysical principles of nerve impulse transmission and synaptic communication.
• Compare nervous and endocrine control mechanisms.
• Discuss common disorders like diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

Topics:
• Nervous system: central and peripheral divisions, neurons, and neuroglia.
• Action potentials and synaptic transmission (biophysics of ion channels and neurotransmitters).
• Brain and spinal cord structure and function.
• Endocrine system: major glands (pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, pancreas) and hormones.
• Feedback loops (negative and positive) and hormone-receptor interactions.
• Practical: Reflex arc demonstration and blood glucose measurement simulation.

Day 4: Transport and Exchange Systems – Cardiovascular, Lymphatic, Respiratory, and Urinary

Objectives:
• Describe the macro structure and functions of the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems.
• Explain gas exchange in the respiratory system and its biophysics.
• Understand the urinary system's role in filtration and homeostasis.
• Apply principles of pressure, flow, and diffusion to these systems.
• Identify common pathologies such as hypertension and asthma.

Topics:
• Cardiovascular system: heart anatomy, blood vessels, cardiac cycle, and blood pressure regulation.
• Biophysics of blood flow (Poiseuille's law, Bernoulli's principle).
• Lymphatic system: structure, lymph formation, and immunity.
• Respiratory system: airways, lungs, mechanics of breathing, gas exchange (Fick's law).
• Urinary system: kidney structure, nephron function, filtration, reabsorption, and secretion.
• Acid-base balance and fluid homeostasis.
• Case study: Hypertension and renal failure.

Day 5: Digestion, Metabolism, Reproduction, and Integrated System Review

Objectives:
• Describe the macro structure and functions of the digestive and reproductive systems.
• Explain metabolic processes and energy biophysics.
• Integrate knowledge of all body systems in health and disease.
• Apply biophysical principles to digestion, absorption, and reproduction.
• Demonstrate understanding through case studies and practical assessment.

Topics:
• Digestive system: organs, digestion, absorption, and biophysics of enzyme kinetics and transport.
• Metabolism: anabolism, catabolism, and energy balance (calorimetry).
• Reproductive system: male and female anatomy, gametogenesis, and hormonal control.
• Integration of systems: how systems work together during exercise and stress.
• Review of biophysics across systems (e.g., fluid dynamics, electrical activity, diffusion).
• Practical assessment: Case study analysis and oral presentation on a system disorder.
• Final Q&A and evaluation.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
