Description

This course equips learners with a foundational understanding of probation work, including the legal framework, roles and responsibilities of probation officers, and the principles of offender supervision and rehabilitation. It prepares participants to support the reintegration of offenders into society and contribute to community safety.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Probation Work

Objectives:
• Understand the role and purpose of probation services in the South African criminal justice system.
• Identify key legislation and policies governing probation work.
• Explain the ethical principles and values underpinning probation practice.
• Describe the structure and functions of the Department of Social Development and Correctional Services.
• Recognise the importance of multi-disciplinary collaboration.

• Introduction to probation work: history and evolution.
• Legal framework: Criminal Procedure Act, Child Justice Act, Probation Services Act.
• Ethical considerations: confidentiality, impartiality, respect for human dignity.
• Roles and responsibilities of probation officers.
• Overview of the criminal justice system and stakeholders.
• Case management principles and record-keeping.

Day 2: Assessment and Interviewing Skills

Objectives:
• Apply basic interviewing techniques for gathering client information.
• Conduct a pre-sentence assessment using standardised tools.
• Identify risk and protective factors in offender profiles.
• Document assessment findings accurately and objectively.
• Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and non-judgmental attitude.

• Core interviewing skills: active listening, open-ended questioning, rapport building.
• Pre-sentence report components and writing guidelines.
• Risk assessment frameworks: static and dynamic factors.
• Assessing social circumstances, education, employment, and substance use.

Day 3: Supervision and Case Management

Objectives:
• Develop supervision plans tailored to individual offender needs.
• Monitor compliance with court orders and conditions.
• Apply motivational interviewing techniques to support behaviour change.
• Identify and respond to breaches of supervision.
• Maintain accurate case files and progress notes.

Topics:
• Principles of effective supervision: structure, support, accountability.
• Case planning: goal setting, referral to services, review schedules.
• Motivational interviewing: stages of change, building readiness.
• Managing non-compliance: warnings, reports to court, revocation.
• Record-keeping: case notes, contact logs, report writing.
• Role-play: supervision session and breach management.

Day 4: Working with Vulnerable Groups and Specialised Interventions

Objectives:
• Understand the unique needs of child offenders under the Child Justice Act.
• Apply gender-sensitive approaches in probation work.
• Identify signs of substance abuse, mental health issues, and trauma.
• Facilitate referrals to appropriate support services.
• Promote restorative justice practices and victim-offender mediation.

Topics:
• Child justice: diversion programmes, preliminary inquiries, family group conferencing.
• Gender considerations: women offenders, domestic violence, sexual offences.
• Substance abuse: screening, brief intervention, referral to treatment.
• Mental health awareness: common disorders, crisis intervention.
• Restorative justice: principles, conferencing, community service.
• Case study: developing a holistic intervention plan.

Day 5: Integration, Reporting, and Professional Development

Objectives:
• Compile comprehensive pre-sentence and progress reports.
• Present findings effectively in court and to stakeholders.
• Develop a personal professional development plan.
• Apply self-care strategies to manage occupational stress.
• Synthesise learning through a final case study and presentation.

Topics:
• Advanced report writing: structure, language, recommendations.
• Courtroom etiquette and giving evidence.
• Inter-agency communication and collaboration.
• Professional ethics: boundaries, dual relationships, self-awareness.
• Stress management and vicarious trauma prevention.
• Final assessment: case study presentation and feedback.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
