Description

This course equips professionals with the knowledge and skills to identify signs of child abuse and neglect in the South African context, and to provide appropriate support and referral. Participants will learn about legal obligations, reporting procedures, and trauma-informed approaches to safeguarding children.

Course Outline

Day 1: Understanding Child Abuse and Legal Frameworks

Objectives:
• Define child abuse and neglect within the South African context.
• Distinguish between physical, emotional, sexual abuse, and neglect.
• Explain the Children’s Act 38 of 2005 and its implications for mandatory reporting.
• Identify signs and indicators of abuse across different age groups.
• Understand the roles of key stakeholders (social workers, police, educators) in child protection.

• Introduction to child abuse: definitions, prevalence, and impact.
• Types of abuse: physical, emotional, sexual, neglect – characteristics and examples.
• South African legal framework: Children’s Act, Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Amendment Act.
• Mandatory reporting requirements and procedures.
• Recognising physical and behavioural indicators of abuse.
• Cultural considerations and myths about child abuse in South Africa.
• Overview of the child protection system and multi-disciplinary teams.
• Case studies illustrating different abuse scenarios.

Day 2: Effective Identification and Initial Response

Objectives:
• Apply observation and interviewing techniques to identify possible abuse.
• Demonstrate appropriate initial response when a child discloses abuse.
• Document observations and disclosures accurately and confidentially.
• Assess immediate safety needs and refer to appropriate services.
• Recognise vicarious trauma and self-care strategies for practitioners.

Topics:
• Observational techniques: behavioural changes, physical signs, and environmental cues.
• Child-friendly interviewing: building rapport, using open-ended questions, avoiding leading questions.
• Handling disclosures: do’s and don’ts, ensuring the child’s comfort and safety.
• Documentation standards: objective recording, confidentiality, and legal requirements.
• Safety assessment: immediate risk factors and emergency procedures.
• Referral pathways: reporting to social workers, SAPS, and child protection organisations.
• Managing personal stress and vicarious trauma: self-care and support systems.
• Role-play exercises for disclosure scenarios.

Day 3: Support, Intervention, and Prevention Strategies

Objectives:
• Describe support services and interventions available for abused children and their families.
• Develop a safety plan and coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams.
• Implement prevention programmes in community and school settings.
• Evaluate case studies to apply integrated support approaches.
• Advocate for child protection policies and awareness in their own contexts.

Topics:
• Support services: counselling, medical care, foster care, and shelters.
• Multi-disciplinary collaboration: roles of social workers, psychologists, educators, and health professionals.
• Developing safety plans: steps and stakeholder involvement.
• Therapeutic interventions: trauma-informed care and child-centred approaches.
• Prevention strategies: awareness campaigns, life skills programmes, and parental education.
• Case management: monitoring, follow-up, and record-keeping.
• Ethical considerations and professional boundaries.
• Action planning: participants create a personal action plan for their workplace.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
