This course equips Christian ministry practitioners with foundational skills in translating the Greek New Testament. Learners will develop the ability to read, analyze, and translate Greek texts accurately for sermon preparation, Bible study, and theological reflection. Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, familiarity with the New Testament and basic English grammar is beneficial.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Greek Language and Alphabet

Objectives:
• Understand the historical and linguistic context of Koine Greek.
• Recognise and pronounce the Greek alphabet and diphthongs.
• Identify basic Greek punctuation and accents.
• Appreciate the importance of Greek for New Testament translation.

Topics:
• Overview of Koine Greek in the New Testament
• The Greek alphabet: letters, names, and sounds
• Diphthongs and breathing marks
• Punctuation and accent marks
• Practical exercises in reading and writing Greek

Day 2: Basic Greek Grammar – Nouns and Adjectives

Objectives:
• Define the Greek noun system: case, number, gender.
• Decline nouns of the first and second declensions.
• Understand and use the definite article.
• Apply adjective-noun agreement in translation.

Topics:
• Introduction to cases (nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, vocative)
• First declension nouns (feminine and masculine)
• Second declension nouns (masculine, feminine, neuter)
• The definite article (ὁ, ἡ, τό)
• Adjectives: first/second declension patterns
• Simple translation exercises

Day 3: Verbs – Present Active Indicative

Objectives:
• Identify the components of a Greek verb (stem, ending, augment).
• Conjugate present active indicative verbs.
• Understand person and number in verb forms.
• Translate simple present tense sentences.

Topics:
• Verb overview: tense, voice, mood
• Present active indicative: personal endings
• Conjugation of ω-verbs (e.g., λύω)
• The verb “to be” (εἰμί)
• Basic sentence translation with subjects and verbs

Day 4: Prepositions, Conjunctions, and Basic Syntax

Objectives:
• Use common Greek prepositions with correct cases.
• Recognise and translate conjunctions.
• Understand basic word order and clause structure.
• Translate short phrases and clauses.

Topics:
• Prepositions taking genitive, dative, accusative (e.g., ἐν, εἰς, διά)
• Conjunctions: καί, δέ, γάρ, οὖν
• Basic sentence patterns (subject-verb-object)
• Use of the article with prepositional phrases
• Translation practice with simple sentences

Day 5: Pronouns and the Imperfect Tense

Objectives:
• Identify and decline personal, demonstrative, and relative pronouns.
• Form and translate the imperfect active indicative.
• Distinguish between present and imperfect tenses.
• Translate passages containing pronouns and imperfect verbs.

Topics:
• Personal pronouns (ἐγώ, σύ, etc.)
• Demonstrative pronouns (οὗτος, ἐκεῖνος)
• Relative pronoun (ὅς, ἥ, ὅ)
• Imperfect active indicative: augment and endings
• Translation exercises with pronouns and imperfect tense

Day 6: Future and Aorist Tenses (Active Indicative)

Objectives:
• Form and translate the future active indicative.
• Form and translate the aorist active indicative.
• Understand the concept of aspect in Greek tenses.
• Translate narratives using future and aorist.

Topics:
• Future active indicative: σ- future
• Aorist active indicative: first aorist endings
• Second aorist (irregular forms)
• Aspect: imperfective vs. perfective
• Translation of short narrative passages

Day 7: Middle/Passive Voice and Participles

Objectives:
• Recognise and translate middle/passive verb forms.
• Understand the function of participles.
• Form and translate present active participles.
• Use participles in translation for descriptive clauses.

Topics:
• Middle/passive voice: present, future, aorist endings
• Deponent verbs
• Introduction to participles: present active participle
• Participle syntax: attributive, circumstantial
• Translation exercises with voice and participles

Day 8: Subjunctive Mood, Infinitives, and Commands

Objectives:
• Form and translate the present active subjunctive.
• Recognise and translate infinitives.
• Understand the imperative mood for commands.
• Translate purpose clauses and indirect commands.

Topics:
• Subjunctive mood: present active endings
• Uses of subjunctive (purpose, hortatory, deliberative)
• Infinitive: present active form and uses
• Imperative mood: present active commands
• Translation of complex sentences

Day 9: Advanced Translation and Ministerial Application

Objectives:
• Translate extended passages from the Greek New Testament.
• Use lexicons and parsing tools for difficult forms.
• Apply translation skills to sermon preparation and Bible study.
• Evaluate different English translations for accuracy.

Topics:
• Translation of selected passages (e.g., John 1:1-14, Romans 3:21-26)
• Use of Greek lexicons and parsing guides
• Textual criticism basics: variants and manuscript evidence
• Ministerial application: preaching and teaching from the Greek
• Final translation project and review

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
