Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Electric Fencing and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of electric fencing
• Identify legal and safety requirements
• Recognize different types of electric fence systems
• Explain the role of electric fencing in security and agriculture

• History and applications
• Legal requirements (SANS 10222, OHSA)
• Safety precautions and PPE
• Basic electrical theory (voltage, current, resistance)
• Components overview: energizer, conductors, insulators, earth system
• Types of electric fences (security, agricultural, wildlife)
• Standards and regulations in South Africa

Day 2: Energizers and Power Supply

Objectives:
• Select appropriate energizers for different applications
• Understand energizer specifications (joules, voltage, output)
• Install and connect energizers safely
• Troubleshoot common energizer issues

Topics:
• Types of energizers (mains, battery, solar)
• Energizer ratings and selection criteria
• Installation of mains-powered energizers
• Battery and solar energizer installation
• Earthing and surge protection
• Connecting energizer to fence line
• Testing energizer output
• Common faults and diagnostics

Day 3: Conductors and Fence Line Construction

Objectives:
• Select appropriate conductors for specific fences
• Install and tension conductors correctly
• Join and terminate conductors properly
• Understand conductor spacing and configuration

• Types of conductors (steel wire, polywire, tape, netting)
• Conductor selection based on application
• Tensioning techniques and tools
• Joining methods (connectors, knots, crimps)
• Corner posts and strainers
• Line posts and droppers
• Spacing and height requirements
• Vegetation management along fence line

Day 4: Insulators, Posts, and Hardware

Objectives:
• Identify and select appropriate insulators
• Install insulators correctly on various post types
• Understand post types and installation methods
• Use hardware for gates and corners

• Types of insulators (pin, strain, stay, offset)
• Insulator materials (porcelain, plastic, rubber)
• Installing insulators on wood, steel, and concrete posts
• Post types and installation (driven, dug, concrete)
• Gate hardware and insulated gate handles
• Corner and end assemblies
• Cable ties, brackets, and accessories
• Maintenance of insulators

Day 5: Earthing Systems and Surge Protection

Objectives:
• Design and install effective earthing systems
• Understand the role of earthing in shock severity
• Install surge protection devices
• Test earth resistance

Topics:
• Principles of earthing
• Earth rod installation (length, depth, spacing)
• Soil resistivity and multiple rods
• Connecting earth system to energizer
• Surge protection (lightning and power surges)
• Installing surge arrestors
• Testing earth resistance with a meter
• Common earthing problems and solutions

Day 6: Fence Energizer and System Testing

Objectives:
• Perform voltage and current measurements
• Interpret test results to identify faults
• Adjust energizer settings for optimal performance
• Document test results

• Using a digital voltmeter and fence tester
• Measuring voltage at various points
• Measuring current (leakage)
• Interpreting readings (voltage drop, pulse shape)
• Fault finding (short circuits, open circuits, vegetation)
• Adjusting energizer pulse rate and power

• Reporting and documentation

Day 7: Gates, Signage, and Compliance

Objectives:
• Install gates with proper electrification
• Erect warning signs as per regulations
• Ensure compliance with SANS 10222
• Understand legal liabilities

• Warning sign requirements (size, placement, wording)

Day 8: Advanced Applications and Course Review

• Design electric fences for specialized applications
• Integrate electric fences with alarm systems
• Review all course content
• Complete final assessment

• Temporary and portable fences

Practicals

Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are essential for developing proficiency in electric fence installation, testing, and fault-finding. Learners will work in groups to construct fence sections, install energizers and earthing systems, and use test equipment to verify performance and safety.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Fence Line Construction — Learners construct a 50-meter fence line including corner posts, strainers, line posts, insulators, and conductors (wire and polytape). (8h)
  • Practical 2: Energizer and Earthing Installation — Learners install a mains-powered energizer, connect it to the fence line, and install an earthing system with multiple rods. (8h)
  • Practical 3: Testing and Fault-Finding — Learners use digital multimeters and fence testers to measure voltage and current, diagnose intentional faults (short, open, vegetation), and rectify them. (8h)
  • Practical 4: Gate Electrification and Signage — Learners install an electrified gate with insulated handles and underground cable, and erect compliant warning signs. (4h)
  • Practical 5: Comprehensive System Installation and Assessment — Learners work in teams to install a complete electric fence system from scratch, including energizer, earthing, fence line, gate, and signage, followed by a final practical assessment. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
