Day 1: Introduction to Intruder Alarm Systems

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and scope of intruder alarm systems
• Identify key components of a typical alarm system
• Explain basic alarm system operation principles
• Recognise relevant SAQA and industry standards

Topics:
• Overview of intruder alarm systems and their role in security
• Types of alarm systems: wired, wireless, hybrid
• Basic components: control panel, sensors, keypads, sirens
• Alarm signalling methods: local, monitored, remote
• Introduction to SANS 10233 and other relevant standards
• Safety precautions when working with alarm systems

Day 2: Sensors and Detection Devices

Objectives:
• Differentiate between various sensor types
• Explain the working principles of common detection devices
• Identify appropriate sensor placement for different environments
• Understand sensor specifications and limitations

Topics:
• Magnetic reed switches: operation and installation
• Passive infrared (PIR) detectors: theory and coverage patterns
• Dual-technology and microwave detectors
• Glass-break detectors: acoustic and shock sensors
• Vibration sensors and surface-mounted detectors
• Environmental sensors: smoke, heat, flood, gas

Day 3: Control Panels and Keypads

Objectives:
• Describe the function of control panels in alarm systems
• Identify control panel types and their features
• Program basic settings on a control panel
• Understand keypad operation and user interfaces

Topics:
• Control panel architecture: main board, zones, outputs
• Power supply considerations: battery backup and charging
• Keypad types: LCD, LED, touchscreen
• Zone configuration: normally closed, normally open, end-of-line
• Basic programming: arming modes, entry/exit delays
• Communication modules: GSM, IP, radio

Day 4: Wiring and Installation Practices

Objectives:
• Apply safe wiring techniques for alarm systems
• Read and interpret installation diagrams
• Select appropriate cables and connectors
• Perform basic continuity and voltage tests

• Cable types: multi-core, twisted pair, coaxial, fire-resistant
• Cable routing and termination best practices
• End-of-line resistors and tamper circuits
• Power distribution and voltage drop calculations
• Use of multimeters and test equipment
• Earthing and surge protection

Day 5: Alarm Signalling and Communication

Objectives:
• Explain different alarm signalling methods
• Understand the role of monitoring stations
• Configure communication paths for alarm transmission
• Troubleshoot common signalling issues

• Signalling methods: PSTN, GSM, GPRS, IP, radio
• Monitoring station protocols: CID, SIA, Contact ID
• Dual-path and multi-path communication
• Event logging and reporting
• Testing communication links
• Redundancy and failover strategies

Day 6: System Integration and Advanced Features

Objectives:
• Describe integration of alarm systems with other security systems
• Understand home automation and smart alarm features
• Explain remote access and mobile app functionality
• Identify advanced detection technologies

• Integration with CCTV, access control, and intercoms
• Home automation integration: lights, locks, thermostats
• Smart alarm features: push notifications, geofencing
• Video verification and alarm confirmation
• Advanced sensors: thermal, radar, laser

Day 7: Fault Finding and Maintenance

Objectives:
• Apply systematic fault-finding techniques
• Diagnose common alarm system faults
• Perform routine maintenance and testing
• Document service and maintenance activities

• Fault-finding methodology: visual inspection, metering, substitution
• Common faults: false alarms, communication failures, sensor malfunctions
• Battery testing and replacement procedures
• Cleaning and adjustment of sensors
• Logbook maintenance and reporting
• Compliance with SANS 10233 for maintenance

Day 8: Regulations, Standards, and Professional Practice

Objectives:
• Understand legal and regulatory requirements for alarm systems
• Apply SANS 10233 and other relevant standards
• Demonstrate professional conduct and customer communication
• Prepare for unit standard assessment

Topics:
• Overview of PSIRA regulations and registration requirements
• SANS 10233: installation, monitoring, and response standards
• Code of conduct for security practitioners
• Customer communication and handover procedures
• Documentation: certificates, as-built drawings, manuals
• Assessment preparation and revision

Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are essential for learners to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. These sessions cover installation, wiring, programming, fault-finding, and maintenance of intruder alarm systems, ensuring competence in practical skills required by the unit standard.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Sensor Installation and Wiring — Learners install magnetic reed switches, PIR detectors, and glass-break sensors on training boards, including cable routing and termination. (6h)
  • Practical 2: Control Panel Programming and Configuration — Learners program a control panel, set up zones, configure entry/exit delays, and test arming modes using a keypad. (6h)
  • Practical 3: System Integration and Signalling — Learners integrate alarm system with communication modules (GSM/IP), set up monitoring station reporting, and test event logs. (6h)
  • Practical 4: Fault Finding and Maintenance — Learners diagnose and rectify common faults introduced on training systems, perform battery replacement, and complete maintenance logbooks. (6h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
