Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Supervision and Maritime Legislation

Objectives:
• Understand the role and responsibilities of a shipboard supervisor.
• Identify key South African and international maritime legislation affecting supervision.
• Recognise effective communication and leadership techniques for multicultural crews.
• Apply basic conflict resolution and performance management principles.

• Introduction to shipboard supervision: roles, authority, and accountability
• Overview of relevant legislation: SAMSA, SOLAS, STCW, MLC 2006
• Leadership styles and situational management at sea
• Effective communication: barriers and best practices in a maritime environment
• Managing diversity and fostering teamwork onboard
• Performance monitoring, feedback, and corrective actions
• Conflict resolution and grievance handling procedures

Day 2: Advanced Supervisory Practices and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Develop skills in planning, delegating, and supervising shipboard operations.
• Implement safety management systems and conduct effective toolbox talks.
• Apply techniques for training, mentoring, and assessing crew competence.
• Evaluate supervisory scenarios through case studies and role-play exercises.

• Operational planning and resource allocation
• Delegation techniques and accountability assignment
• Safety management systems: ISM Code, risk assessment, and incident reporting
• Conducting toolbox talks and safety briefings
• Onboard training: coaching, mentoring, and competency assessment

Practicals

Overview

The practicals component allows learners to apply supervisory concepts in simulated maritime scenarios. Through role-plays, toolbox talk practice, and incident response exercises, learners develop hands-on skills in communication, delegation, and safety management.

Practical Activities

Toolbox Talk Simulation — Learners prepare and deliver a toolbox talk on a selected safety topic, receiving peer and facilitator feedback. (2h)
Conflict Resolution Role-Play — Learners participate in scripted role-plays involving common onboard conflicts, then debrief and discuss resolution strategies. (2h)
Incident Response and Delegation Exercise — Teams respond to a simulated emergency scenario, practicing delegation, resource coordination, and post-incident reporting. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
