Interpret And Produce Free Hand Drawings Training

SAQA US 120224 | NQF 3 | Credits 6 | Duration 3 Days
From $967 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the skills to interpret and produce freehand drawings, enabling clear visual communication of ideas and technical concepts in various workplace contexts. Participants will learn to apply drawing conventions, use appropriate tools, and produce accurate representations to support planning, design, and instructional activities.

Learning Outcomes

  • Interpret and explain the purpose and conventions of freehand drawings in a given context.
  • Apply appropriate drawing techniques and tools to produce accurate freehand sketches.
  • Demonstrate the ability to visualize and represent objects in two and three dimensions.
  • Use dimensioning, scaling, and annotation conventions to enhance drawing clarity.
  • Analyze a drawing brief and produce a freehand drawing that meets specified requirements.
  • Evaluate and refine own drawings for accuracy, proportion, and adherence to standards.

Target Audience

This course is ideal for artisans, technicians, supervisors, and managers who need to convey technical information through sketches, as well as anyone involved in planning, design, or maintenance who requires basic drawing skills.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Free Hand Drawing Principles

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and applications of free hand drawings in various contexts.
• Identify and use basic drawing tools and materials correctly.
• Apply fundamental drawing techniques: line work, proportion, and scale.
• Develop observational skills through simple object sketches.
• Interpret basic drawing conventions and symbols.

Topics:
• Overview of free hand drawing and its importance in technical fields.
• Drawing tools: pencils, erasers, paper types, and sharpeners.
• Basic line types: straight, curved, continuous, and dashed.
• Understanding proportion and scale through grid methods.
• Observational drawing: sketching simple geometric shapes.
• Introduction to drawing conventions: line weights, hatching, and shading.
• Practical exercise: sketching a cube and a cylinder with correct proportions.

Day 2: Developing Technical Drawing Skills

Objectives:
• Construct orthographic projections from 3D objects.
• Apply isometric drawing techniques to represent 3D forms.
• Use measurement and scaling to produce accurate drawings.
• Incorporate dimensioning and annotation standards.
• Create detailed sketches of mechanical or architectural components.

Topics:
• Orthographic projection: front, top, and side views.
• Isometric drawing: axes, angles, and constructing basic shapes.
• Scaling techniques: using rulers and proportional dividers.
• Dimensioning rules: placement, arrows, and units.
• Annotation: labels, notes, and title blocks.
• Practical exercise: sketch a simple bracket in orthographic and isometric views.
• Common errors in free hand technical drawings and how to avoid them.

Day 3: Advanced Applications and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Produce free hand drawings from actual objects or site measurements.
• Apply free hand drawing in problem-solving and design communication.
• Evaluate drawing accuracy and make necessary corrections.
• Demonstrate competence through a practical assessment task.
• Understand quality assurance and drawing standards compliance.

Topics:
• Field sketching: measuring and recording real-world objects.
• Free hand drawing for design iterations and concept communication.
• Error detection and correction techniques in free hand drawings.
• Quality control: checking proportions, scale, and clarity.
• Integration of multiple views and sections in a single drawing.
• Practical assessment: produce a complete free hand drawing of a given object.
• Review of unit standard outcomes and portfolio requirements.
• Feedback session and certification guidance.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 30%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 70%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
