From $832 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the essential knowledge and skills to apply basic health and safety principles in winding operations. It covers hazard identification, risk assessment, and emergency procedures specific to winding environments, ensuring compliance with South African occupational health and safety regulations.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify and explain potential health and safety hazards associated with winding operations.
  • Apply relevant occupational health and safety legislation and procedures to winding activities.
  • Demonstrate correct use of personal protective equipment and safety devices in winding operations.
  • Implement emergency response procedures for winding-related incidents.
  • Conduct basic risk assessments and recommend control measures for winding tasks.
  • Communicate health and safety information effectively within the winding operations team.

Target Audience

This course is intended for operators, supervisors, and safety personnel involved in winding operations in mining, industrial, or manufacturing settings who require foundational health and safety training.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Health and Safety for Winding Operations

Objectives:
• Understand the legal framework and responsibilities under the Mine Health and Safety Act.
• Identify common hazards associated with winding operations.
• Apply risk assessment principles to winding-related tasks.
• Explain the purpose and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in winding areas.

Topics:
• Introduction to health and safety legislation (MHSA, regulations).
• Roles and responsibilities of employers, employees, and contractors.
• Hazard identification: mechanical, electrical, and environmental risks in winding.
• Risk assessment methodology (identify, assess, control, review).
• Personal protective equipment: types, selection, and maintenance.
• Emergency procedures and evacuation plans for winding installations.
• Housekeeping and safe work practices in winding areas.

Day 2: Safe Operating Procedures and Emergency Response

Objectives:
• Describe safe operating procedures for winding equipment.
• Demonstrate correct use of safety devices and interlocks.
• Apply lock-out/tag-out procedures during maintenance.
• Respond appropriately to common winding emergencies.
• Conduct a basic safety inspection of winding equipment.

Topics:
• Safe operating procedures for winders (starting, stopping, emergency stops).
• Safety devices: overspeed protection, brakes, indicators, and alarms.
• Lock-out/tag-out procedures for isolation of energy sources.
• Emergency scenarios: rope slip, overwind, power failure, fire.
• First aid basics and rescue preparedness.
• Incident reporting and documentation.
• Practical safety inspection checklist for winding installations.

Practicals

8 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Learners apply theoretical knowledge in a simulated winding environment. Practical sessions focus on hazard identification, use of safety devices, lock-out/tag-out, and emergency drills to reinforce safe work practices.

Practical Activities
  • Hazard Identification Walk-through — Learners conduct a guided walk-through of a winding area to identify hazards and complete a risk assessment form. (2h)
  • Safety Device Inspection and Testing — Learners inspect and test safety devices on a winding simulator, including emergency stops, brakes, and overspeed protection. (2h)
  • Lock-out/Tag-out Procedure — Learners perform a complete lock-out/tag-out sequence on a simulated winding motor, including isolation, verification, and de-isolation. (2h)
  • Emergency Response Drill — Learners participate in simulated emergency scenarios (e.g., power failure, rope slip) and execute response procedures including evacuation and first aid. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
