This course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to operate alternating current winders and perform electrical motor maintenance in an industrial setting. Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to AC Motors and Winding Principles

Objectives:
• Understand the basic principles of AC motor operation
• Identify different types of AC motors and their applications
• Explain the role of windings in AC motors
• Recognise safety protocols for motor maintenance

• Overview of AC motors: induction, synchronous, single-phase, three-phase
• Basic electromagnetic principles: magnetic fields, flux, torque
• Winding configurations: concentric, lap, wave
• Insulation classes and temperature ratings
• Safety standards: lockout/tagout, PPE, electrical safety

Day 2: AC Motor Construction and Components

Objectives:
• Describe the physical construction of AC motors
• Identify stator, rotor, bearings, and other components
• Understand the function of each component
• Perform visual inspection of motor parts

• Stator core and windings
• Rotor types: squirrel cage, wound rotor
• Bearings: sleeve, ball, roller
• End bells, fans, and terminal boxes
• Nameplate data interpretation
• Common motor faults and failure modes

Day 3: Winding Diagrams and Connection Methods

Objectives:
• Read and interpret winding diagrams
• Understand star and delta connections
• Identify winding configurations for different poles
• Calculate winding parameters

• Pole-changing windings (Dahlander)

Day 4: Testing and Diagnostic Techniques

Day 5: Winding Repair and Rewinding Procedures

Day 12: Practical Integration and Assessment

Practicals

40 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

The practicals provide hands-on experience with AC motor winding, repair, assembly, and testing. Learners will perform actual rewinding, diagnostic tests, and maintenance procedures under supervision, reinforcing theoretical knowledge and building competence.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Motor Disassembly and Inspection — Learners disassemble a three-phase induction motor, identify components, and perform visual inspection and measurements. (8h)
  • Practical 2: Winding Removal and Data Collection — Learners remove old windings, record winding data, and prepare the stator core for rewinding. (8h)
  • Practical 3: Coil Winding and Insertion — Learners wind coils, insert them into stator slots, connect phases, and apply insulation varnish. (12h)
  • Practical 4: Motor Assembly, Testing, and Troubleshooting — Learners assemble the motor, perform electrical and mechanical tests, and diagnose simulated faults. (12h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
