Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of AC Multi-Speed Motors and Electronic Control Systems

Objectives:
• Explain the operating principles of AC multi-speed motors
• Identify and describe the function of key electronic control components
• Interpret wiring diagrams and schematics for basic control circuits
• Perform safety checks and use test equipment to measure voltage, current, and resistance
• Apply lockout/tagout procedures for electrical safety

• Overview of AC motor types and multi-speed configurations
• Principles of speed control: pole changing, variable voltage, and frequency
• Electronic control components: relays, contactors, timers, and variable frequency drives (VFDs)
• Reading and interpreting electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
• Safe use of multimeters, clamp meters, and insulation testers
• Lockout/tagout and electrical safety standards
• Troubleshooting methodology: symptom-to-cause approach

Day 2: Diagnostic Techniques and Component Testing

Objectives:
• Use diagnostic tools to test control circuits and motor windings
• Identify common faults in electronic control systems
• Measure and analyze voltage, current, and resistance in multi-speed motor circuits
• Perform component-level testing of relays, capacitors, and VFDs
• Document test results and interpret fault codes

• Testing motor windings for continuity, resistance, and insulation integrity
• Diagnosing control circuit faults: open circuits, short circuits, and ground faults
• Using oscilloscopes to analyze control signals
• Testing and replacing faulty relays, contactors, and capacitors
• VFD parameter checking and fault code interpretation
• Systematic troubleshooting of multi-speed motor control panels
• Documenting diagnostic findings and repair recommendations

Day 3: Repair, Replacement, and System Integration

Objectives:
• Safely replace faulty components in electronic control systems
• Calibrate and adjust control settings for multi-speed operation
• Verify system functionality after repair
• Apply best practices for wiring, termination, and cable management
• Complete a full repair cycle from diagnosis to commissioning

Topics:
• Safe removal and replacement of electronic control components
• Wiring and termination techniques for control panels
• Adjusting VFD parameters for multi-speed operation
• Testing repaired systems under load and no-load conditions
• Commissioning procedures: sequence of operation checks
• Preventative maintenance practices for electronic controls
• Final assessment: practical repair scenario

Overview

Hands-on practical sessions form a core component of this training, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. Learners will work on functional AC multi-speed motor control systems, performing diagnostics, component testing, and repair procedures under instructor supervision.

Practical Activities
  • Safety and Test Equipment Familiarisation — Learners practice lockout/tagout procedures and use multimeters, clamp meters, and insulation testers on de-energised circuits. (2h)
  • Wiring Diagram Interpretation and Circuit Verification — Learners read wiring diagrams of a multi-speed motor control panel and verify circuit continuity and component connections. (2h)
  • Fault Diagnosis and Component Testing — Learners diagnose simulated faults in a multi-speed motor control system, testing motor windings, relays, and VFDs. (4h)
  • Repair, Replacement, and Commissioning — Learners replace faulty components, rewire connections, and commission the repaired system to ensure correct multi-speed operation. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
