This course provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills to operate a gas auto analyser for measuring evolved gas concentrations in industrial or laboratory settings. It covers calibration, sampling, data interpretation, and safety protocols to ensure accurate and reliable analysis of gas emissions.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Gas Auto Analysers and Evolved Gas Analysis

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of evolved gas analysis and gas auto analysers
• Identify key components and their functions in a gas auto analyser
• Explain calibration procedures and quality control measures
• Describe safety protocols for operating gas analysis equipment
• Interpret basic gas concentration data and readings

Topics:
• Introduction to evolved gas analysis: principles and applications
• Overview of gas auto analyser types (e.g., TGA-MS, TGA-FTIR, gas chromatographs)
• Key components: sample inlet, detectors (TCD, FID, MS), data system
• Calibration methods: zero and span calibration, use of standard gases
• Quality control: system suitability tests, blanks, and duplicates
• Safety considerations: gas handling, ventilation, and emergency procedures
• Data interpretation basics: peak identification and concentration calculation
• Maintenance fundamentals: routine checks and troubleshooting

Day 2: Advanced Operation and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Perform advanced calibration and validation procedures
• Analyse complex gas concentration data and troubleshoot anomalies
• Apply gas auto analyser in real-world scenarios (e.g., environmental monitoring, industrial processes)
• Implement data reporting and documentation standards
• Conduct routine maintenance and performance verification

• Advanced calibration: multi-point calibration and validation using certified reference materials
• Data analysis techniques: integration methods, baseline correction, and quantification
• Troubleshooting common issues: drift, noise, and interference
• Application case studies: evolved gas analysis in materials science, combustion, and environmental monitoring
• Data reporting: generating reports, compliance with standards (ISO, ASTM)
• Routine maintenance: cleaning, leak testing, column conditioning
• Performance verification: using check standards and control charts
• Best practices for long-term instrument stability and accuracy

Overview

Hands-on practical sessions allow learners to operate a gas auto analyser, perform calibrations, analyse samples, and troubleshoot common issues. These sessions reinforce theoretical knowledge and develop competence in instrument operation and data interpretation.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Instrument Familiarisation and Basic Operation — Learners identify components, power on the system, set up software, and perform a simple gas analysis. (2h)
  • Practical 2: Calibration and Quality Control — Learners perform zero and span calibration, run a quality control standard, and evaluate results. (2h)
  • Practical 3: Sample Analysis and Troubleshooting — Learners analyse an unknown sample, interpret the data, and troubleshoot a simulated instrument issue. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
