Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Processes

Objectives:
• Understand the scope and importance of mechanical and electrical engineering processes in industry.
• Identify key components and systems used in mechanical and electrical engineering.
• Explain basic principles of mechanical power transmission and electrical circuits.
• Describe safety procedures and regulatory requirements relevant to engineering processes.
• Apply basic measurement and testing techniques.

• Overview of mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines
• Mechanical systems: gears, bearings, shafts, and couplings
• Electrical systems: motors, generators, and control circuits
• Principles of power transmission and conversion
• Safety regulations (OHS Act, SANS codes)
• Introduction to measuring instruments (multimeters, tachometers, calipers)
• Preventative maintenance fundamentals

Day 2: Procedures for Installation, Maintenance, and Troubleshooting

Objectives:
• Describe step-by-step procedures for installing mechanical and electrical equipment.
• Perform routine maintenance tasks on mechanical drives and electrical panels.
• Identify common faults in mechanical and electrical systems.
• Apply troubleshooting techniques using logical problem-solving methods.
• Document maintenance activities and report findings.

• Installation procedures for pumps, conveyors, and motors
• Electrical wiring and termination standards
• Lubrication and alignment techniques
• Electrical testing: insulation resistance, continuity, and voltage checks
• Fault diagnosis: vibration analysis, thermal imaging, and circuit testing
• Work permits and lockout/tagout procedures
• Maintenance logs and reporting

Day 3: Advanced Applications and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Interpret engineering drawings and schematics for complex systems.
• Plan and execute a coordinated mechanical-electrical maintenance task.
• Apply quality control checks and performance testing.
• Understand condition monitoring and predictive maintenance techniques.
• Evaluate process improvements and energy efficiency opportunities.

• Reading mechanical assembly drawings and electrical circuit diagrams
• Coordinated maintenance of motor-driven systems
• Performance testing: load testing, efficiency calculations
• Condition monitoring: vibration, temperature, and oil analysis
• Energy management in mechanical and electrical systems
• Continuous improvement and root cause analysis
• Team-based practical assessment

Practicals

12 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

The practicals component provides hands-on experience with real mechanical and electrical equipment, reinforcing the theoretical concepts covered in the course. Learners will perform installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting tasks individually and in teams, developing critical skills for workplace application.

Practical Activities
  • Mechanical System Inspection and Lubrication — Learners inspect a gearbox and bearing assembly, perform lubrication, and measure alignment using dial indicators. (3h)
  • Electrical Motor Testing and Control Circuit Wiring — Learners wire a motor control circuit (start/stop), test insulation resistance, and measure voltage and current. (3h)
  • Troubleshooting a Pump-Motor System — Learners diagnose and rectify faults in a coupled pump-motor system using vibration analysis and electrical checks. (3h)
  • Integrated Maintenance Task and Reporting — Learners plan and execute a complete maintenance task on a conveyor system, including mechanical and electrical checks, and complete a maintenance report. (3h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
