Day 1: Introduction to Palletising and Safety Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Understand the course scope and learning outcomes
• Identify key safety regulations and site-specific rules
• Recognise common hazards in bagged mineral product handling
• Explain the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Describe ergonomic principles for manual handling

Day 2: Bag Handling and Pallet Construction

Objectives:
• Demonstrate correct bag lifting and carrying techniques
• Identify bag types and their handling characteristics
• Construct a stable pallet load using interlocking patterns
• Apply weight distribution principles to prevent tipping
• Inspect bags for damage and contamination

• Bag types: paper, polypropylene, woven; moisture and tear resistance
• Lifting techniques: squat lift, power zone, team lifting
• Pallet construction: base, layer pattern, stacking height limits
• Interlocking patterns: block, brick, pinwheel
• Load stability: centre of gravity, banding, stretch wrap
• Bag inspection: tears, spills, labelling

Day 3: Palletising Equipment and Safe Operation

Objectives:
• Identify different types of palletising equipment
• Perform pre-operational checks on palletisers and conveyors
• Safely operate a semi-automatic palletiser
• Respond to equipment alarms and emergency stops
• Explain routine maintenance requirements

• Pre-start inspections: guards, sensors, emergency stops
• Operating controls: conveyor speed, layer forming, discharge
• Emergency procedures: stop, lockout, tagout

Day 4: Load Securing and Wrapping Techniques

Objectives:
• Apply stretch wrap and strapping to secure pallet loads
• Select appropriate wrapping materials for bagged minerals
• Achieve correct tension and overlap for load integrity
• Inspect secured loads for transport readiness
• Identify damage causes during wrapping and transport

• Wrapping materials: stretch film, strapping, edge protectors
• Stretch wrap application: tension, overlap, number of layers
• Strapping methods: steel, plastic; tensioning tools
• Load stability tests: tilt test, compression
• Transport considerations: stacking in trucks, tie-downs
• Damage prevention: sharp edges, moisture, shifting

Day 5: Quality Control and Housekeeping

Objectives:
• Inspect palletised loads against quality standards
• Identify defects: misalignment, damaged bags, unstable stacks
• Perform corrective actions for non-conforming loads
• Maintain a clean and organised work area
• Document quality checks and incidents

Day 6: Teamwork and Communication in Palletising Operations

Day 8: Emergency Response and Incident Management

Day 9: Integrated Practical Assessment and Course Review

• Demonstrate all competencies in a simulated palletising operation
• Complete a full cycle: receipt, palletising, wrapping, dispatch
• Apply safety, quality, and teamwork throughout
• Identify areas for improvement and create action plan
• Review key learning points and final assessment

Overview

Hands-on practicals form the core of this training, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge in a controlled environment. Learners practice manual and semi-automatic palletising, load securing, quality inspection, and emergency response, building confidence and competence for real-world operations.

Practical Activities
  • Manual Palletising and Bag Handling — Learners practice correct lifting, carrying, and stacking techniques using bagged mineral products (simulated). They construct stable pallet loads using interlocking patterns and perform load stability checks. (8h)
  • Semi-Automatic Palletiser Operation — Learners operate a semi-automatic palletiser: perform pre-start checks, run the machine through a full cycle, respond to alarms, and conduct basic fault-finding. (8h)
  • Load Securing and Wrapping — Learners apply stretch wrap and strapping to palletised loads, achieving correct tension and overlap. They inspect finished loads for transport readiness. (8h)
  • Integrated Simulation and Emergency Drill — Learners participate in a full palletising operation simulation including receiving bags, palletising, wrapping, and dispatch. An emergency drill (e.g., fire or spill) is conducted mid-session. (8h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
