Description

This course equips learners with the competencies required to control blasting operations in underground coal mines. It covers safe handling, storage, and use of explosives, blast design, initiation systems, and compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act. Learners will be able to plan, execute, and monitor blasting activities to ensure safety and productivity.

This course is designed for blasting assistants, shift supervisors, mine overseers, and safety officers working in underground coal mining operations who are responsible for or involved in blasting activities.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Underground Coal Mine Blasting

Objectives:
• Understand the legislative framework governing blasting operations in South Africa.
• Identify the roles and responsibilities of the blasting team.
• Recognise the hazards associated with underground coal mine blasting.
• Describe the basic principles of explosives and initiation systems.

Topics:
• Overview of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and relevant regulations.
• Roles: Blasting Assistant, Shift Supervisor, appointed person.
• Hazard identification: methane, coal dust, roof instability, misfires.
• Types of explosives: permitted explosives, ANFO, emulsions.
• Initiation systems: detonators, detonating cord, non-electric systems.
• Safety precautions: storage, transport, handling of explosives.

Day 2: Blasting Theory and Explosive Properties

Objectives:
• Explain the theory of rock breakage by explosives.
• Calculate explosive quantities based on burden and spacing.
• Describe the properties of permitted explosives for coal mines.
• Understand the concept of confinement and its effects.

Topics:
• Rock breakage mechanisms: shock wave, gas expansion.
• Blast design parameters: burden, spacing, stemming, subdrilling.
• Permitted explosives: characteristics, limitations, safety features.
• Explosive properties: velocity of detonation, density, energy output.
• Confinement effects: venting, fragmentation, overpressure.
• Practical calculations for charge weight per hole.

Day 3: Blast Design for Underground Coal Mines

Objectives:
• Design a basic blast pattern for coal headings.
• Select appropriate explosives and initiation sequence.
• Calculate total explosive charge per round.
• Incorporate geological features into blast design.

• Blast patterns: wedge cut, burn cut, parallel hole cut.
• Cut design: angle, depth, number of holes.
• Perimeter control: smooth blasting, pre-splitting.
• Initiation sequence: delay timing, decking.
• Geological considerations: joints, faults, water.

Day 4: Explosives Handling and Safety Procedures

Objectives:
• Demonstrate safe handling and transport of explosives.
• Implement magazine management and security procedures.
• Conduct pre-blast inspections and risk assessments.
• Apply procedures for misfires and emergencies.

• Safe handling: no smoking, static prevention, correct tools.
• Transport: vehicle requirements, segregation, signage.
• Magazine management: storage limits, temperature, ventilation.
• Security: access control, inventory, reporting theft.
• Pre-blast inspection: face condition, drilling accuracy.
• Misfire procedures: identification, marking, disposal.
• Emergency response: fire, explosion, first aid.

Day 5: Charging and Stemming Techniques

Objectives:
• Prepare and charge blast holes correctly.
• Apply stemming materials and methods.
• Ensure proper primer placement and initiation hookup.
• Verify charge continuity and circuit integrity.

• Hole preparation: cleaning, depth check, water removal.
• Charging: manual vs. pneumatic, cartridge loading.
• Primer placement: bottom vs. top initiation.
• Stemming: material selection, length, tamping.
• Initiation system hookup: trunkline, connectors.
• Circuit testing: continuity, resistance, stray current checks.
• Records: charge log, shotfirer's report.

Day 6: Blasting Operations and Supervision

Objectives:
• Supervise the charging and firing process.
• Manage blast area security and exclusion zones.
• Conduct post-blast inspection and ventilation management.
• Document blast results and report incidents.

• Pre-blast meeting: briefing, task allocation.
• Exclusion zones: barricades, signs, guard posts.
• Firing procedure: clearance, countdown, initiation.
• Post-blast inspection: fume clearance, face condition.
• Ventilation: re-entry time, gas monitoring.

Day 7: Ventilation and Gas Management After Blasting

Objectives:
• Understand the role of ventilation in clearing blasting fumes.
• Monitor and interpret gas levels post-blast.
• Implement re-entry procedures safely.
• Respond to excessive gas concentrations.

• Blasting fumes: CO, NOx, SO2, their effects.
• Ventilation systems: auxiliary fans, ducting, brattice.
• Gas detection: portable monitors, fixed sensors.
• Re-entry criteria: gas limits, time delays.

Day 8: Blasting in Special Conditions

Day 9: Blasting Assessment and Quality Control

Day 10: Legal Compliance and Documentation

Day 11: Emergency Preparedness and Response

Overview

Practical sessions provide hands-on experience in charging blast holes, stemming, initiation hookup, and post-blast inspection. Learners apply theoretical knowledge in a simulated underground environment under supervision, ensuring competence in safe blasting operations.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Explosives Handling and Magazine Management — Learners practice safe receipt, storage, and issuing of explosives from a magazine, including inventory control and security procedures. (8h)
  • Practical 2: Charging and Stemming Techniques — Learners charge blast holes with permitted explosives, place primers, and stem holes using approved materials and methods. (8h)
  • Practical 3: Initiation System Hookup and Firing — Learners connect initiation circuits, test continuity, and conduct a simulated firing with proper clearance and safety checks. (8h)
  • Practical 4: Integrated Blast Simulation and Assessment — Learners design, charge, and fire a simulated blast round, including misfire management and documentation. (8h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
