Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to CNC Machining and Equipment Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Understand the role of CNC machining in manufacturing.
• Identify key components and types of CNC machines.
• Explain basic operating principles and axis configurations.
• Distinguish between different CNC machine categories (milling, turning, multi-axis).

Topics:
• Overview of CNC technology and applications.
• Machine components: spindle, tool changer, control panel, axes.
• Types of CNC machines: vertical/horizontal machining centres, lathes, routers.
• Axis configurations and coordinate systems (X, Y, Z, rotary).
• Workholding and tooling basics.
• Safety standards and personal protective equipment.
• Introduction to machine specifications and datasheets.

Day 2: Machine Selection Criteria and Technical Specifications

Objectives:
• Evaluate key technical specifications for CNC machines.
• Compare machine rigidity, accuracy, repeatability, and speed.
• Analyse spindle power, torque, and speed ranges.
• Assess control systems and software compatibility.

Topics:
• Machine size, travel, and work envelope.
• Spindle characteristics: power, torque, speed, taper.
• Accuracy and repeatability standards (ISO 230, VDI 3441).
• Feed rates, rapid traverse, and acceleration.
• Tool changer capacity and tool management.
• Control system options: Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain, etc.
• Coolant systems, chip management, and enclosures.
• Electrical and utility requirements.

Day 3: Tooling, Workholding, and Automation Integration

Objectives:
• Select appropriate tooling and workholding solutions.
• Understand automation interfaces for CNC machines.
• Evaluate robotic loading/unloading and pallet systems.
• Analyse cost implications of automation integration.

Topics:
• Cutting tool materials and geometries.
• Tool holders and balancing requirements.
• Workholding options: vises, chucks, fixtures, vacuum tables.
• Automation interface: robot arm, gantry loader, conveyor.
• Pallet systems and multi-pallet changers.
• Probing and in-process measurement.
• Integration with CAM software and DNC systems.
• Cost-benefit analysis of automation.

Day 4: Supplier Evaluation, Lifecycle Costing, and Procurement

Objectives:
• Evaluate suppliers based on reputation, support, and warranty.
• Calculate total cost of ownership for CNC equipment.
• Develop procurement documentation (RFQ, technical specs).
• Understand installation, commissioning, and training requirements.

Topics:
• Supplier assessment: references, service network, spare parts.
• Total cost of ownership: purchase price, installation, maintenance, energy.
• Financing options and leasing considerations.
• Writing technical specifications for RFQs.
• Installation requirements: foundation, power, compressed air.
• Commissioning process and acceptance testing.
• Training needs for operators and programmers.
• Warranty and service level agreements.

Day 5: Implementation Planning, Risk Management, and Final Assessment

Objectives:
• Develop an implementation plan for new CNC equipment.
• Identify risks and mitigation strategies.
• Perform a sample machine selection exercise.
• Present a justification report for equipment acquisition.

• Project planning: timeline, resources, milestones.
• Risk assessment: technical, financial, operational.
• Machine selection case study (hands-on evaluation).
• Developing a business case and ROI analysis.
• Change management and staff training plans.
• Documentation: installation checklist, maintenance schedule.
• Final assessment: written test and practical evaluation.

Practicals

20 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practicals allow learners to apply selection criteria by evaluating actual CNC machines, comparing specifications, and performing machine inspection exercises. Supervised sessions build competence in reading datasheets, measuring machine accuracy, and preparing procurement documentation.

Practical Activities
  • Machine Datasheet Analysis — Learners review datasheets from three different CNC machines, identify key specifications, and compare their suitability for given manufacturing scenarios. (4h)
  • Machine Inspection and Measurement Exercise — Using a workshop CNC machine, learners perform basic inspection tasks: checking axis movement, spindle runout, and tool changer operation using dial indicators and laser alignment tools. (6h)
  • Tooling and Workholding Selection Workshop — Given a part drawing and machine specifications, learners select appropriate cutting tools, tool holders, and workholding devices, justifying their choices. (4h)
  • Supplier Evaluation Role-Play — Learners act as procurement teams evaluating supplier proposals, scoring criteria such as price, warranty, support, and delivery, then presenting their recommendation. (3h)
  • Machine Selection Case Study — Learners work in groups to select a CNC machine for a given production scenario, considering technical specs, cost, and supplier factors, and prepare a final selection report. (3h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
