Equipment Failure Analysis and Prevention Training

SAQA US 335898 | NQF 5 | Credits 12 | Duration 4 Days
From $1,107 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the skills to coordinate predictive and preventative maintenance (PPM) programmes in an industrial or manufacturing environment. Participants will learn to plan, schedule, and oversee maintenance activities to minimise downtime and extend asset life. The focus is on applying systematic approaches to improve equipment reliability and operational efficiency.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply principles of predictive and preventative maintenance to develop a coordinated maintenance plan.
  • Analyse equipment failure data to identify trends and prioritise maintenance tasks.
  • Implement a PPM schedule that optimises resource allocation and minimises production disruptions.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of PPM programmes using key performance indicators.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate maintenance plans and coordinate with relevant stakeholders.

Target Audience

This course is designed for maintenance supervisors, team leaders, and technicians who are responsible for coordinating maintenance activities. It is also suitable for engineers and operations managers seeking to enhance their understanding of PPM coordination.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Day 1: Foundations of Maintenance Management

Objectives:
• Understand the principles and importance of predictive and preventative maintenance.
• Differentiate between reactive, preventative, and predictive maintenance strategies.
• Identify key roles and responsibilities in maintenance coordination.
• Recognise the impact of maintenance on asset lifecycle and organisational performance.

Topics:
• Introduction to maintenance management and its strategic role.
• Types of maintenance: reactive, preventative, predictive, and proactive.
• Key concepts: reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety (RAMS).
• Overview of maintenance planning and scheduling.
• Maintenance metrics: MTBF, MTTR, OEE.
• Case studies: benefits of preventative vs. predictive maintenance.
• Introduction to relevant standards (e.g., ISO 55000).

Day 2: Day 2: Preventative Maintenance Planning and Scheduling

Objectives:
• Develop a preventative maintenance (PM) schedule based on equipment criticality.
• Apply time-based and usage-based maintenance triggers.
• Create standard operating procedures (SOPs) for PM tasks.
• Use work orders to manage PM activities effectively.

Topics:
• Equipment criticality ranking and risk-based prioritisation.
• Time-based vs. condition-based PM triggers.
• Developing PM task lists and checklists.
• Work order generation, assignment, and closure.
• Spare parts management and inventory optimisation.
• Scheduling techniques: fixed interval, floating, and calendar-based.
• Introduction to CMMS (Computerised Maintenance Management System).

Day 3: Day 3: Predictive Maintenance Techniques and Condition Monitoring

Objectives:
• Explain the principles of predictive maintenance (PdM) and condition monitoring.
• Identify common PdM technologies: vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis, ultrasonics.
• Interpret basic condition monitoring data to detect anomalies.
• Integrate PdM findings into maintenance planning.

Topics:
• Overview of predictive maintenance technologies.
• Vibration analysis: sensors, data collection, and interpretation.
• Thermography: thermal imaging for electrical and mechanical faults.
• Oil analysis: lubricant condition and wear debris analysis.
• Ultrasonic testing: leak detection and bearing condition.
• Data trending and alarm set points.
• Combining PdM with PM for optimal maintenance strategy.

Day 4: Day 4: Implementation, Coordination, and Continuous Improvement

Objectives:
• Develop a coordinated maintenance plan integrating PM and PdM.
• Implement a maintenance coordination framework within an organisation.
• Use root cause analysis (RCA) to address recurring failures.
• Apply continuous improvement tools (e.g., PDCA, Kaizen) to maintenance processes.

Topics:
• Building a master maintenance schedule.
• Coordination between maintenance, operations, and procurement.
• Root cause analysis (RCA) and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA).
• Continuous improvement: PDCA cycle, Kaizen events.
• Maintenance audits and performance reviews.
• Change management for maintenance program implementation.
• Final assessment and course wrap-up.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 30%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 70%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
