Description

This course equips learners with the skills to safely and efficiently operate and monitor a lathe in a manufacturing environment. Participants will gain practical knowledge of lathe setup, tooling, machining operations, and quality control to produce components to specification.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate safe work practices and adherence to health and safety regulations when operating a lathe.
  • Apply correct procedures for setting up and adjusting lathe components, including chucks, centres, and tool posts.
  • Perform basic turning operations such as facing, cylindrical turning, taper turning, and parting-off to specified dimensions.
  • Monitor machining processes and make necessary adjustments to achieve required tolerances and surface finishes.
  • Inspect finished workpieces using measuring instruments and interpret results to ensure conformity to specifications.
  • Implement routine maintenance procedures and identify common faults in lathe operation.

This course is designed for machine operators, artisans, and technicians in engineering and manufacturing sectors who need to operate a lathe as part of their job functions.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Lathe Operation and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the basic principles of lathe operation
• Identify lathe components and their functions
• Apply safety procedures and use personal protective equipment
• Interpret machine specifications and workholding devices

Topics:
• Overview of lathe types and applications
• Lathe components: headstock, tailstock, carriage, bed
• Workholding methods: chucks, collets, faceplates
• Cutting tool materials and geometry
• Safety regulations and lockout/tagout procedures
• Housekeeping and fire prevention
• Introduction to machine manuals and specifications

Day 2: Lathe Setup and Workholding

Objectives:
• Set up the lathe for basic turning operations
• Select and mount appropriate workholding devices
• Align and centre workpieces accurately
• Perform basic tool setting and height adjustment

Topics:
• Mounting and truing workpieces in chucks
• Using centres and steady rests
• Tool post types and tool holder selection
• Setting tool height and centre alignment
• Workpiece inspection and runout measurement
• Lubrication and coolant systems

Day 3: Turning Operations – Facing, Straight Turning, and Shouldering

Objectives:
• Perform facing and straight turning operations
• Machine shoulders to specified dimensions
• Select appropriate speeds and feeds
• Measure diameters and lengths using micrometers and callipers

Topics:
• Cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut calculations
• Facing techniques and tool approach
• Straight turning with carriage feed
• Shoulder turning: square, angular, and radiused
• Precision measurement using micrometers and callipers
• Surface finish parameters

Day 4: Taper Turning and Knurling

Objectives:
• Set up and machine tapers using compound rest and tailstock offset
• Perform knurling operations for grip surfaces
• Inspect taper angles with gauges
• Adjust speeds for knurling

Topics:
• Taper turning methods: compound rest, tailstock offset, taper attachment
• Calculating taper per foot and included angle
• Knurling tool selection and alignment
• Knurling patterns: diamond, straight, and helical
• Inspection of tapers using ring gauges and sine bars

Day 5: Thread Cutting – External and Internal Threads

Objectives:
• Set up the lathe for thread cutting
• Cut external and internal threads using thread chasing dial
• Select proper tool and thread form
• Verify thread pitch and fit with gauges

Topics:
• Thread forms: metric, imperial, Whitworth, Acme
• Gear train setup for thread cutting
• Thread chasing dial operation
• Cutting external threads with multiple passes
• Cutting internal threads with boring bar
• Thread measurement using thread gauges and three-wire method

Day 6: Boring, Drilling, and Reaming

Objectives:
• Perform boring operations to enlarge and finish holes
• Drill and ream holes accurately using tailstock
• Select boring bars and tooling
• Achieve tight tolerances on internal diameters

Topics:
• Boring bar types and setup
• Boring techniques for through and blind holes
• Drilling with twist drills in tailstock
• Reaming for precise hole sizing
• Alignment and concentricity checks
• Cutting fluids for hole operations

Day 7: Parting, Grooving, and Form Turning

Objectives:
• Perform parting-off operations safely
• Cut grooves to specified dimensions
• Use form tools for complex profiles
• Apply techniques to minimise vibration and chatter

Topics:
• Parting tool geometry and setup
• Parting techniques: feed rate and coolant
• Grooving: external and internal grooves
• Form tool design and application
• Chatter suppression methods
• Inspection of groove width and depth

Day 8: Advanced Operations – Eccentric Turning and Multi-start Threads

Objectives:
• Machine eccentric diameters using offset methods
• Cut multi-start threads and calculate leads
• Use steady rests for long slender workpieces
• Integrate multiple operations in a single setup

Topics:
• Eccentric turning: chuck offset and faceplate methods
• Multi-start thread calculation and setup
• Thread chasing for multi-start threads
• Using steady and follower rests
• Combined operations: turning, threading, and boring
• Process planning for complex components

Day 9: Quality Control, Troubleshooting, and Final Assessment

Objectives:
• Inspect finished components against specifications
• Identify and resolve common lathe problems
• Apply quality control procedures
• Complete a practical assessment demonstrating competence

Topics:
• Dimensional inspection using gauges and CMM basics
• Surface finish measurement
• Common faults: chatter, taper errors, tool wear
• Troubleshooting: speeds, feeds, tool geometry
• Maintenance: cleaning, lubrication, and minor adjustments
• Final practical assessment and review

Practicals

36 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Practical sessions are integral to this course, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge in a workshop setting. Under supervision, learners will set up lathes, perform turning, threading, boring, and finishing operations, and inspect their work to industry standards.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Basic Lathe Setup and Facing — Learners set up a centre lathe, mount a workpiece in a three-jaw chuck, and perform facing and straight turning to specified dimensions. (8h)
  • Practical 2: Taper Turning and Knurling — Learners machine a taper using the compound rest method and apply a knurled pattern on a cylindrical surface. (8h)
  • Practical 3: Thread Cutting and Boring — Learners cut an external metric thread and bore an internal diameter to a close tolerance, then inspect using thread gauges and bore gauges. (10h)
  • Practical 4: Combined Operations and Quality Inspection — Learners produce a component requiring turning, facing, drilling, and grooving, then perform a full dimensional inspection and report deviations. (10h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
