Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Paper Board, Pulp, and Tissue Manufacturing

Objectives:
• Understand the properties and grades of paper board, pulp, and tissue
• Identify the raw materials used in production
• Explain the basic manufacturing processes
• Recognize the role of slitting and cutting in converting operations

Topics:
• Overview of paper board, pulp, and tissue industries
• Raw materials: wood pulp, recycled fibre, additives
• Manufacturing processes: pulping, refining, forming, pressing, drying
• Introduction to converting: slitting, cutting, rewinding
• Safety basics in paper mill environments

Day 2: Pulp Preparation and Quality Control

Objectives:
• Describe pulping methods (mechanical, chemical, recycled)
• Understand pulp quality parameters (freeness, consistency, brightness)
• Perform basic pulp quality tests
• Identify common pulp defects

• Mechanical pulping: groundwood, refiner mechanical pulp
• Chemical pulping: Kraft, sulphite
• Recycled fibre processing: deinking, screening
• Pulp quality testing: freeness, consistency, pH, brightness
• Defects: shives, dirt, fibre bundles

Day 3: Paper Board and Tissue Manufacturing Processes

Objectives:
• Explain the paper board and tissue machine operations
• Understand forming, pressing, and drying sections
• Identify process variables affecting quality
• Describe winding and reel handling

• Fourdrinier and cylinder formers for board
• Tissue machines: crescent former, suction press
• Press section: roll presses, shoe presses
• Drying: cylinder drying, Yankee dryer for tissue
• Reeling: pope reel, reel spool handling

Day 4: Introduction to Slitting and Cutting Operations

• Differentiate between slitting and cutting
• Understand the principles of web handling
• Identify slitting methods: shear, score, razor
• Recognize cutting techniques: guillotine, rotary

Day 5: Slitting Equipment and Setup

Objectives:
• Identify components of slitting machines
• Understand knife geometry and materials
• Perform basic slitter setup and adjustments
• Troubleshoot common slitting issues

• Slitter types: duplex, centre-surface, differential
• Knife materials: high-speed steel, carbide, ceramic
• Knife geometry: bevel angles, clearance
• Setup: knife positioning, pressure, speed
• Common issues: dust, edge quality, chatter

Day 6: Cutting Equipment and Setup

Objectives:
• Identify types of cutting machines
• Understand blade selection and maintenance
• Perform cutting machine setup
• Troubleshoot cutting defects

• Cutting machines: sheeters, cutters, trimmers
• Blade types: straight, circular, serrated
• Blade maintenance: sharpening, replacement
• Setup: sheet length, stack height, cutting sequence
• Defects: feathering, tearing, inaccurate length

Day 7: Quality Control in Slitting and Cutting

• Define quality parameters for slit and cut products
• Use measurement tools to inspect output
• Interpret quality data and adjust processes
• Implement corrective actions for defects

Day 12: Environmental and Sustainability Practices

• Waste management: broke, edge trim, sludge

Day 13: Integration, Assessment, and Final Practical

Overview

Practical sessions are essential for learners to gain hands-on experience with slitting and cutting equipment, setup, adjustment, troubleshooting, and quality inspection. These supervised exercises reinforce theoretical knowledge and develop competence in safe, efficient operation.

Practical Activities
  • Slitter Setup and Operation — Learners set up a shear slitter for a paper board run, adjust knife pressure and overlap, run the machine, and inspect edge quality. (12h)
  • Cutting Machine Setup and Operation — Learners set up a guillotine cutter for tissue sheets, adjust cutting sequence and blade depth, and produce accurate stacks. (10h)
  • Troubleshooting and Maintenance — Learners diagnose simulated faults on slitting and cutting equipment, perform routine maintenance tasks, and document findings. (8h)
  • Quality Inspection and Process Adjustment — Learners inspect slit rolls and cut stacks using gauges, record quality data, and make adjustments to improve output. (6h)
  • Integrated Production Run — Learners plan and execute a full production run from setup to finished product, including changeover and waste management. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
