Day 1: Introduction to Paper Defects and Visual Inspection

Objectives:

• Overview of paper manufacturing and quality standards
• Common paper defects: holes, spots, wrinkles, streaks, and slime spots
• Causes of defects: raw materials, process variations, and equipment issues
• Principles of visual inspection: lighting, viewing angles, and distance
• Safety and ergonomics for inspectors

Day 2: Defect Classification and Terminology

Objectives:
• Classify defects by type (surface, structural, optical)
• Use standard terminology for defect description
• Differentiate between critical and non-critical defects
• Apply defect severity ratings

Topics:
• Defect classification systems (e.g., TAPPI, ISO)
• Surface defects: pits, blisters, and debris
• Structural defects: tears, holes, and edge cracks
• Optical defects: color variation, brightness, and opacity
• Severity rating scales and defect categorization

Day 3: Visual Inspection Techniques and Tools

Objectives:
• Master proper lighting and viewing techniques
• Use magnification and measurement tools effectively
• Perform systematic inspection patterns
• Document inspection findings accurately

• Lighting types: transmitted, reflected, and polarized light
• Viewing angles and inspection distances
• Use of magnifiers, microscopes, and gauges
• Inspection patterns: grid, spiral, and strip methods
• Documentation: defect logs, photos, and reports

Day 4: Defect Identification – Surface and Structural Defects

Objectives:
• Identify surface defects such as spots, wrinkles, and creases
• Recognize structural defects like holes, tears, and edge damage
• Distinguish between similar-looking defects
• Understand defect origins and implications

• Detailed examination of spots: dirt, grease, and coating defects
• Wrinkles and creases: causes and severity
• Holes and tears: size measurement and classification
• Edge defects: cracks, curls, and damage
• Defect origin analysis: process vs. material

Day 5: Defect Identification – Optical and Coating Defects

Objectives:
• Identify optical defects: color variation, mottle, and gloss
• Detect coating defects: streaks, skips, and blisters
• Use instruments to measure optical properties
• Relate defects to customer specifications

• Color variation and shade matching
• Mottle and formation issues
• Gloss and surface smoothness defects
• Coating defects: uneven coating, scratches, and orange peel
• Measurement instruments: spectrophotometers, gloss meters

Day 6: Inspection Standards and Specifications

Objectives:
• Interpret customer specifications and quality standards
• Apply accept/reject criteria based on defect severity
• Understand sampling plans and AQL levels
• Communicate findings according to standard procedures

• Quality standards: ISO, SAQA, and company specifications
• Acceptable Quality Limits (AQL) and sampling plans
• Defect severity classification: critical, major, minor
• Reporting formats: defect maps and summary sheets
• Communication with production and quality teams

Day 7: Advanced Inspection Techniques and Automation

• Explore automated inspection systems (vision systems)
• Understand the role of sensors and cameras
• Integrate manual inspection with automated checks
• Troubleshoot common inspection errors

• Overview of automated inspection: cameras, lighting, and software
• Manual vs. automated inspection: strengths and limitations

Day 8: Practical Application and Case Studies

• Apply inspection techniques on real paper samples

• Case studies: root cause analysis of recurring defects

Day 9: Assessment and Certification

Objectives:
• Demonstrate proficiency in defect identification
• Complete a practical inspection test
• Receive feedback and improvement areas
• Understand path to SAQA certification

Overview

The practicals are essential for developing hands-on skills in visual inspection of paper defects. Learners will practice using inspection tools, apply classification standards, and document findings on real paper samples to prepare for workplace quality control roles.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Inspection Tools and Techniques — Learners practice using magnifiers, gauges, and lighting setups to inspect sample paper sheets for defects. (8h)
  • Practical 2: Defect Classification and Reporting — Learners classify defects on provided samples using standard terminology and severity ratings, and complete defect reports. (8h)
  • Practical 3: Advanced Inspection and Case Studies — Learners inspect complex samples with multiple defects and analyze case studies to determine root causes. (8h)
  • Practical 4: Final Inspection Assessment — Learners perform a timed inspection of several samples, documenting all defects and making accept/reject decisions. (8h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
