Day 1: Introduction to Raw Materials and Pulp Chemicals

• Describe basic safety protocols in the testing laboratory

Day 2: Sampling and Sample Preparation

Objectives:
• Explain the importance of representative sampling
• Apply correct sampling techniques for raw materials and chemicals
• Prepare samples for physical and chemical analysis
• Document sampling procedures accurately

• Sampling equipment and containers
• Sampling procedures for solid, liquid, and slurry materials

• Sample preparation: drying, grinding, sieving

Day 3: Physical Testing of Raw Materials

Objectives:
• Perform physical tests on raw materials
• Measure moisture content, bulk density, and particle size

Day 6: Chemical Analysis of Pulp and Paper

Overview

Practical sessions are integral to this course, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge in a laboratory setting. Learners will perform hands-on sampling, physical and chemical tests, and data interpretation using standard equipment. These sessions ensure competence in testing procedures and quality control.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Sampling and Sample Preparation — Learners collect representative samples from raw material piles and chemical drums, then prepare them for testing. (6h)
  • Practical 2: Physical Testing of Raw Materials and Pulp — Learners measure moisture content, bulk density, particle size, and pulp freeness using standard equipment. (8h)
  • Practical 3: Chemical Testing of Pulp Chemicals — Learners perform titrations for caustic soda concentration and chlorine dioxide, and measure pH and conductivity. (8h)
  • Practical 4: Paper Physical and Chemical Testing — Learners test paper tensile, tear, burst, brightness, and kappa number on provided samples. (6h)
  • Practical 5: Data Interpretation and Quality Reporting — Learners compile test data into control charts and write a quality report for a simulated production batch. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.
