Safe Mechanical Electrical Work On Air Conditioning Refrigeration Ventilation Training

SAQA US 116241 | NQF 2 | Credits 7 | Duration 4 Days
From $1,107 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to perform safe mechanical and electrical work on air conditioning, refrigeration, and ventilation systems. It focuses on identifying hazards, implementing safety procedures, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. The training prepares participants to work confidently and safely in environments involving these systems.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply safety procedures and use personal protective equipment (PPE) when working on mechanical and electrical components of air conditioning, refrigeration, and ventilation systems.
  • Identify potential hazards and assess risks associated with mechanical and electrical work on these systems.
  • Demonstrate correct lock-out/tag-out procedures and isolation of energy sources before commencing work.
  • Analyze and interpret technical diagrams, schematics, and manufacturer specifications to ensure safe work practices.
  • Implement emergency response actions in the event of accidents, refrigerant leaks, or electrical incidents.
  • Evaluate compliance with relevant occupational health and safety legislation and standards.

Target Audience

This course is designed for technicians, maintenance personnel, and engineers who install, maintain, or repair air conditioning, refrigeration, and ventilation systems. It is also suitable for supervisors and safety officers overseeing such work.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, learners should have basic literacy and numeracy skills.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Mechanical and Electrical Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the legal framework and regulations governing safe mechanical and electrical work.
• Identify common hazards associated with mechanical and electrical systems in HVACR.
• Apply lockout/tagout procedures and safe isolation of energy sources.
• Demonstrate proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Topics:
• Introduction to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and relevant regulations.
• Types of hazards: electrical shock, arc flash, mechanical moving parts, refrigerant exposure.
• Principles of lockout/tagout (LOTO) and zero energy state verification.
• Selection and inspection of PPE (gloves, goggles, insulated tools).
• Fire safety and emergency response basics.
• Safe work permits and risk assessment procedures.

Day 2: Electrical Systems and Safe Work Practices

Objectives:
• Interpret electrical diagrams and schematics for HVACR equipment.
• Perform safe electrical testing using multimeters and clamp meters.
• Identify and mitigate risks associated with capacitors and high-voltage circuits.
• Apply safe wiring practices and understand earthing/grounding requirements.

Topics:
• Reading electrical diagrams and control circuits.
• Safe use of test instruments: voltage, current, resistance measurements.
• Capacitor discharge procedures and safe handling.
• Wiring practices: terminations, cable management, and colour codes.
• Earth leakage protection and bonding.
• Troubleshooting common electrical faults safely.

Day 3: Mechanical Systems and Refrigerant Handling Safety

Objectives:
• Safely operate and maintain mechanical components such as compressors, fans, and pumps.
• Apply safe refrigerant handling practices including recovery and charging.
• Identify mechanical hazards and implement guarding and safety controls.
• Understand the risks of pressure systems and safe pressure testing.

Topics:
• Mechanical components: compressors, condensers, evaporators, expansion devices.
• Lockout procedures for rotating equipment and pinch points.
• Refrigerant safety: toxicity, flammability, and pressure dangers.
• Proper use of recovery machines and cylinders.
• Pressure testing and leak detection safety.
• Safe use of hand and power tools for mechanical work.

Day 4: Integrated Safety Practices and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Conduct a comprehensive risk assessment for HVACR maintenance tasks.
• Demonstrate safe isolation, testing, and recommissioning procedures.
• Apply integrated safe work practices in a simulated work scenario.
• Complete a practical assessment covering mechanical and electrical safety.

Topics:
• Step-by-step safe isolation procedure for an HVACR system.
• Combined electrical and mechanical risk assessment.
• Practical exercise: LOTO, electrical testing, and mechanical servicing.
• Emergency procedures: refrigerant leak, electrical fire, injury.
• Documentation and reporting of safety incidents.
• Summative assessment: practical demonstration and written test.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 30%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 70%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
