This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to select, use, and care for engineering hand tools safely and effectively. Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, learners should have basic literacy and numeracy skills.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Engineering Hand Tools and Safety

Objectives:
• Identify common engineering hand tools and their uses.
• Understand workplace safety procedures and legal requirements.
• Explain the importance of tool selection for specific tasks.
• Demonstrate correct handling and storage of hand tools.

Topics:
• Overview of engineering hand tools: spanners, wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, chisels, files, and measuring tools.
• Safety regulations (OHS Act, SANS codes) and personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Tool selection criteria: material, size, type, and task suitability.
• Basic ergonomics and safe handling practices.
• Tool storage: toolboxes, shadow boards, and inventory control.
• Introduction to tool maintenance: cleaning and inspection.

Day 2: Cutting, Striking, and Clamping Tools

Objectives:
• Select appropriate cutting and striking tools for different materials.
• Demonstrate safe use of hacksaws, chisels, and hammers.
• Apply correct techniques for clamping and gripping with pliers and vices.
• Identify defects and maintenance needs for these tools.

Topics:
• Cutting tools: hacksaws (blade selection, tensioning, cutting techniques), cold chisels, and files.
• Striking tools: ball-peen hammers, club hammers, and mallets; striking technique and safety.
• Clamping tools: vices, C-clamps, and locking pliers; proper setup and usage.
• Tool inspection for wear, damage, and sharpness.
• Practical exercises: cutting steel rod, chiselling, and filing flat surfaces.

Day 3: Measuring, Marking, and Layout Tools

Objectives:
• Use measuring tools (steel rule, callipers, micrometres) accurately.
• Apply marking and layout techniques for precision work.
• Maintain and calibrate measuring instruments.
• Interpret engineering drawings for measurement requirements.

Topics:
• Measuring tools: steel rules, vernier callipers, micrometres, and tape measures; reading and accuracy.
• Marking tools: scribers, centre punches, dividers, and squares.
• Layout techniques: scribing lines, marking centres, and using surface plates.
• Care and calibration: cleaning, storage, and zero error checks.
• Practical exercises: measuring diameters, depths, and marking out a workpiece.

Day 4: Threading, Fastening, and Assembly Tools

Objectives:
• Select and use threading tools (taps and dies) correctly.
• Apply torque specifications with wrenches and screwdrivers.
• Identify fastener types and their applications.
• Perform assembly and disassembly tasks safely.

Topics:
• Threading tools: taps, dies, and tap wrenches; thread cutting techniques.
• Fastening tools: combination spanners, socket sets, torque wrenches, and screwdrivers.
• Fastener types: bolts, nuts, washers, and screws; thread identification.
• Torque settings and tightening sequences.
• Assembly and disassembly procedures for common engineering components.
• Practical exercises: cutting external and internal threads, tightening bolts to torque.

Day 5: Tool Maintenance, Troubleshooting, and Integration

Objectives:
• Perform routine maintenance and sharpening of hand tools.
• Diagnose and rectify common tool problems.
• Integrate all skills in a comprehensive practical task.
• Complete tool inventory and reporting documentation.

Topics:
• Maintenance procedures: cleaning, lubricating, sharpening (files, chisels), and rust removal.
• Troubleshooting: worn jaws, damaged handles, loss of accuracy.
• Tool life extension and replacement criteria.
• Documentation: tool registers, inspection checklists, and incident reports.
• Integrated practical assessment: select, use, and care for tools to complete a multi-step engineering task.
• Final review and Q&A.

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
