Day 1: Introduction to Material Selection and Loading

Day 2: Material Specifications and Quality Standards

Objectives:
• Interpret material specifications from technical drawings and work orders.
• Apply South African and international quality standards (e.g., SANS, ISO).
• Distinguish between raw materials and finished goods.
• Perform basic material inspection and verification.

• Reading material specification sheets.
• Understanding grades, dimensions, and tolerances.
• Quality standards: SANS, ISO 9001, and industry-specific norms.
• Inspection tools: callipers, micrometres, gauges.
• Non-conformance reporting.
• Supplier documentation and certificates of analysis.

Day 3: Material Handling Equipment and Operation

Objectives:
• Identify different material handling equipment and their applications.
• Operate manual and powered handling equipment safely.
• Perform pre-operational checks on equipment.
• Apply correct lifting techniques to prevent injury.

• Types of handling equipment: forklifts, pallet jacks, conveyors, hoists.
• Manual handling: safe lifting, carrying, and placing.
• Pre-use inspection checklists.
• Operating controls and safety features.
• Load capacity and centre of gravity.
• Battery charging and maintenance for powered equipment.

Day 4: Loading Techniques and Procedures

• Describe loading procedures for different material types.
• Apply correct loading techniques to prevent damage.
• Secure loads using appropriate methods.
• Calculate load distribution and weight limits.

• Loading procedures for bulk, palletised, and loose materials.
• Using slings, chains, and straps.
• Load securing: tie-downs, chocks, and dunnage.
• Weight calculation and load distribution.
• Loading onto racks, shelves, and transport vehicles.
• Avoiding contamination and mixing of materials.
• Documentation during loading: tags, labels, and logs.
• Communication signals during loading operations.

Day 5: Material Identification and Segregation

Objectives:
• Identify materials using visual, labelling, and testing methods.
• Segregate materials according to type, grade, and status.
• Apply colour coding and labelling standards.
• Prevent cross-contamination and mix-ups.

• Visual identification: colour, texture, and marking.
• Label reading: barcodes, RFID, and tags.
• Segregation principles: by material type, grade, and quality status.
• Colour coding systems for materials.
• Quarantine procedures for non-conforming materials.
• Storage compatibility: chemicals, flammables, and perishables.
• Inventory management basics.
• Housekeeping in storage areas.

Day 6: Loading for Production Input

Objectives:
• Prepare materials for production according to work orders.
• Load materials into machines or production lines correctly.
• Verify material quantity and quality before loading.
• Troubleshoot common loading issues.

• Kitting materials for production runs.
• Loading raw materials into hoppers, feeders, or conveyors.
• Setting up material dispensers and feeders.
• Verifying material against job requirements.

Day 7: Health, Safety, and Environmental Considerations

Objectives:
• Identify hazards associated with material handling and loading.
• Apply risk assessment techniques.
• Implement emergency response procedures.
• Comply with environmental regulations for waste and spills.

• Hazard identification: manual handling, machinery, slips, and falls.
• Risk assessment: likelihood and severity.

Day 8: Record Keeping and Documentation

• Understand the importance of documentation in quality assurance.

Day 9: Practical Integration and Assessment

• Complete the final assessment.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
