This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to set up processes for tube and pipe production in a manufacturing environment. It covers the identification of specifications, preparation of materials and tools, and the setup of machines and equipment to ensure efficient and safe production. The course is designed to meet the requirements of the SAQA unit standard 119053.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Tube and Pipe Production

Objectives:
• Understand the scope and outcomes of the unit standard
• Identify different types of tubes and pipes used in industry
• Describe the basic production process flow
• Recognise safety and quality requirements

• Types of tubes and pipes: materials, sizes, applications
• Production process stages: cutting, bending, joining, finishing
• Safety protocols in tube and pipe production
• Quality standards and specifications

Day 2: Materials and Properties

Objectives:
• Distinguish between common tube and pipe materials
• Explain material properties affecting production
• Select appropriate material for given applications
• Interpret material specifications and certifications

• Steel, stainless steel, copper, aluminium, plastic pipes
• Mechanical properties: strength, ductility, hardness
• Corrosion resistance and thermal properties
• Material standards (e.g., ASTM, SANS)
• Material handling and storage

Day 3: Measurement and Inspection Tools

Objectives:
• Identify and use basic measurement instruments
• Perform dimensional inspections on tubes and pipes
• Record measurements accurately
• Interpret inspection results against specifications

• Vernier callipers, micrometres, tape measures
• Go/no-go gauges, wall thickness gauges
• Measuring diameter, wall thickness, ovality
• Inspection procedures and documentation
• Tolerance interpretation

Day 4: Cutting Processes – Manual and Mechanical

Objectives:
• Describe manual and mechanical cutting methods
• Set up and operate cutting equipment safely
• Achieve square and burr-free cuts
• Inspect cut quality

• Hacksaws, tube cutters, abrasive saws
• Band saws, chop saws, cold saws
• Blade selection and speed settings
• Cutting parameters for different materials
• Deburring techniques

Day 5: Pipe Bending – Principles and Hand Bending

Objectives:
• Explain bending principles: springback, neutral axis
• Use hand benders for small diameter pipes
• Calculate bend allowance
• Inspect bend quality

• Bending theory: tension, compression, neutral axis
• Hand benders: lever type, ratchet type
• Bend allowance calculations
• Springback and overbending
• Common defects and remedies

Day 6: Pipe Bending – Machine Bending

Objectives:
• Set up and operate a manual pipe bender
• Perform mandrel bending for thin-wall tubes
• Adjust bend radius and angle
• Troubleshoot bending issues

• Manual rotary draw benders
• Mandrel bending: when and how
• Setting bend angle and radius stops
• Lubrication and cooling
• Troubleshooting wrinkles, flattening, cracks

Day 7: Pipe Bending – CNC and Advanced Techniques

Objectives:
• Programme a simple CNC bender
• Perform multi-bend sequences
• Understand springback compensation
• Apply advanced bending methods

• CNC bender controls and programming
• Multi-bend sequences and collision avoidance
• Springback compensation techniques
• Heat bending for large diameters
• Induction bending overview

Day 8: Joining Methods – Threading and Mechanical Fittings

Objectives:
• Identify threaded and mechanical joining methods
• Set up threading dies and machines
• Cut threads on pipe ends
• Assemble mechanical joints

• Thread types: BSP, NPT, metric
• Manual and machine threading
• Thread cutting dies and chasers

Day 9: Joining Methods – Welding Preparation

Objectives:
• Prepare pipe ends for welding
• Set up welding equipment (MIG/TIG)
• Execute basic tack welds
• Inspect weld preparation quality

• Beveling techniques for thick walls
• MIG and TIG welding principles

Day 10: Joining Methods – Welding and Brazing

Objectives:
• Perform full penetration welds on pipe
• Braze copper and brass fittings
• Apply post-weld heat treatment if needed
• Inspect welded joints for defects

Day 19: Troubleshooting and Problem Solving

Day 20: Practical Integration and Assessment

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
