This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to inspect and design looms and harnesses in textile manufacturing. Target Audience

Prerequisites

Learners should have basic literacy and numeracy skills. Prior experience in textile manufacturing or machine operation is recommended but not required.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Loom and Harness Systems

Objectives:
• Understand the basic components and functions of a loom.
• Identify different types of harness systems and their applications.
• Recognise the importance of inspection and design in textile manufacturing.

• Loom components: frame, heddles, reed, shuttle

Day 2: Materials and Specifications

Objectives:
• Describe materials used in harness construction.
• Interpret technical specifications for loom components.
• Apply material selection criteria for durability and performance.

• Yarn types and their impact on harness design
• Reading and understanding spec sheets
• Wear resistance and fatigue analysis
• Standards and regulations in textile machinery

Day 3: Inspection Techniques and Tools

Objectives:
• Demonstrate the use of inspection tools for looms and harnesses.
• Identify common defects and wear patterns.
• Document inspection findings accurately.

• Non-destructive testing (NDT) basics

Day 4: Harness Design Principles

Day 5: Advanced Inspection and Diagnostics

Day 6: Custom Design and Modification

Day 7: Integration and Quality Assurance

Practicals

Overview

Hands-on practicals are essential for developing competence in inspecting and designing loom harness systems. Learners will use actual looms, inspection tools, and design software to apply theoretical knowledge.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Loom and Harness Familiarisation — Learners identify and label components on a working loom and harness assembly. (4h)
  • Practical 2: Inspection of Harness Components — Using inspection tools, learners assess harness condition and record defects. (6h)
  • Practical 3: Harness Design with CAD Software — Learners create a basic harness design using CAD software, applying load calculations. (6h)
  • Practical 4: Diagnostic Data Collection and Analysis — Learners use vibration sensors and thermography to diagnose harness issues. (4h)
  • Practical 5: Final Project: Inspection and Redesign — Learners inspect a harness, propose a redesign, and present their findings. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
