Multi User Networked Operating System Monitoring And Maintenance Training

SAQA US 114053 | NQF 5 | Credits 6 | Duration 3 Days
From $967 per delegate

Description

This course equips IT professionals with the skills to monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot multi-user networked operating systems. Participants will learn to ensure system availability, performance, and security in a networked environment. The training aligns with SAQA Unit Standard 114053, focusing on practical competencies for system administration.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply monitoring tools to track system performance and resource utilization in a multi-user networked environment.
  • Analyze system logs and performance data to identify potential issues and bottlenecks.
  • Evaluate security vulnerabilities and implement appropriate access controls and patches.
  • Design maintenance schedules and backup strategies to ensure system reliability and data integrity.
  • Implement user account management procedures, including creation, modification, and deletion of accounts.
  • Demonstrate troubleshooting techniques for common network and operating system problems.

Target Audience

IT support technicians, network administrators, and system administrators responsible for managing multi-user networked operating systems in medium to large enterprises.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Multi-User Networked Operating Systems

Objectives:
• Explain the role of a networked operating system in a multi-user environment
• Identify key components and services of a networked OS
• Describe user account management and authentication mechanisms
• Outline basic network monitoring concepts
• Understand security principles for multi-user systems

Topics:
• Overview of multi-user networked operating systems (e.g., Windows Server, Linux)
• Core services: DNS, DHCP, file sharing, print services
• User account management: creation, modification, deletion, groups
• Authentication protocols: NTLM, Kerberos, LDAP
• Introduction to network monitoring: logs, performance counters, alerts
• Security fundamentals: permissions, encryption, firewalls
• Backup and recovery basics

Day 2: Monitoring and Performance Tuning

Objectives:
• Use monitoring tools to track system performance and resource usage
• Interpret performance metrics and identify bottlenecks

• Common issues: connectivity, authentication, resource contention
• Disaster recovery: backup types (full, incremental), restore procedures
• Security hardening: group policies, firewall rules, access control lists
• Automation with PowerShell or Bash scripts
• Remote management: RDP, SSH, remote monitoring tools
• Documentation best practices: change logs, incident reports, system diagrams
• Final assessment and review

Practicals

12 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on labs are essential for learners to apply monitoring and maintenance techniques in a simulated multi-user networked environment. Practicals reinforce theoretical concepts and build confidence in using tools, troubleshooting, and performing routine tasks.

Practical Activities
  • User Account Management and Permissions — Create and manage user accounts, groups, and permissions on a Windows Server or Linux system. (3h)
  • Performance Monitoring and Alert Configuration — Use Performance Monitor and Event Viewer to track system metrics and set up alerts for critical thresholds. (3h)
  • Backup, Restore, and Disaster Recovery — Perform a full backup of key system data, simulate a failure, and restore from backup. (3h)
  • Network Troubleshooting and Security Hardening — Diagnose common network issues using command-line tools and apply security hardening measures. (3h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
