Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Access Scaffolding and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the scope and requirements of Unit Standard 119042.
• Identify different types of access scaffolding and their applications.
• Recognize key safety legislation and industry standards (OHSA, SANS 10085-1).
• Explain the roles and responsibilities of scaffold erectors, users, and inspectors.
• Describe the consequences of non-compliance with safety regulations.

• Types of scaffolding: independent, putlog, birdcage, mobile, tower.
• Relevant South African legislation: OHSA, SANS 10085-1, SANS 10085-2.

• Personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
• Scaffolding terminology: standards, ledgers, transoms, braces, ties.
• Introduction to scaffold tags and inspection procedures.

Day 2: Scaffolding Components and Materials

• Identify and describe all components of tube and coupler scaffolding.
• Understand material specifications and load ratings for steel, aluminum, and timber.
• Inspect components for damage, corrosion, and defects.
• Explain proper storage and handling of scaffolding materials.
• Calculate quantities of components for basic scaffold configurations.

• Tubes: sizes, wall thickness, grades (steel, aluminum).
• Couplers: right-angle, swivel, sleeve, putlog, beam clamps.
• Base plates, sole boards, and adjustable jacks.
• Scaffold boards: grades, lengths, and load capacities.
• Guardrails, toe boards, and mid-rails.
• Ties: through-ties, reveal ties, anchor ties.
• Ladders and access components.
• Material inspection checklist and rejection criteria.

Day 3: Scaffolding Design Principles and Load Calculations

Objectives:
• Understand basic structural principles: stability, strength, rigidity.
• Calculate dead load, live load, and environmental loads.
• Determine safe working load (SWL) for given scaffold configurations.
• Apply factor of safety as per SANS standards.
• Interpret design drawings and load tables.

• Principles of scaffold design: base, bay, lift, and bracing.
• Load types: dead, live, wind, and impact loads.
• Load distribution and transfer to ground.
• Safe working load (SWL) and maximum intended load (MIL).
• Factor of safety: 4:1 for static loads.

• Practical exercise: calculate loads for a 3-lift independent scaffold.
• Common design errors and how to avoid them.

Day 4: Site Preparation and Foundation Requirements

Objectives:
• Assess ground conditions and select suitable foundations.
• Prepare the site: clearing, leveling, and compaction.
• Install base plates and sole boards correctly.
• Understand drainage and weather protection measures.
• Identify hazards during site preparation and implement controls.

Topics:
• Ground bearing capacity and testing methods.
• Types of foundations: concrete slabs, compacted soil, timber sleepers.
• Sole board dimensions and positioning.
• Base plate types and adjustment for uneven ground.
• Drainage to prevent water accumulation.
• Weather considerations: wind, rain, lightning.
• Site hazard identification: overhead power lines, underground services.
• Practical: set out and level a scaffold base.

Day 5: Erecting Basic Scaffold Structures

Objectives:
• Assemble first lift of a simple independent scaffold.
• Install standards, ledgers, and transoms with correct spacing.
• Fit base plates and ensure level and plumb.
• Install bracing: longitudinal and transverse.
• Demonstrate safe use of tools and equipment during erection.

Topics:
• Step-by-step erection procedure for a basic independent scaffold.
• Setting out first lift: spacing of standards (max 2.1m).
• Connecting ledgers and transoms with right-angle couplers.
• Plumb and level checks using spirit level and line.
• Longitudinal bracing: diagonal braces every 5 bays.
• Transverse bracing: at ends and every 4 bays.
• Safe use of scaffold spanners, levels, and lanyards.
• Practical exercise: erect a 2-lift independent scaffold.

Day 6: Advanced Erection: Multi-Lift and Cantilever Scaffolds

Objectives:
• Erect multi-lift scaffolds with correct tie-in and bracing.
• Install cantilever and outrigger systems.
• Understand loading bay and staircase integration.
• Apply advanced bracing patterns for stability.
• Work at height safely using fall arrest systems.

• Multi-lift erection: adding lifts, tying to structure.
• Cantilever scaffolds: design and installation.
• Outrigger beams and counterweights.
• Loading bays: construction and safety features.
• Scaffold staircases and ladder access.

Day 7: Altering and Modifying Existing Scaffolds

• Implement control measures during modification work.

• Inspect components during dismantling for reuse.
• Manage debris and clean up the site.

• Dismantling sequence: top-down, last erected first removed.
• Maintaining stability: temporary ties and bracing.
• Safe lowering techniques: ropes, gin wheels, hoists.
• Component inspection and sorting.
• Dealing with damaged components.
• Housekeeping and waste disposal.

• Practical: dismantle a 4-lift scaffold with cantilever.

Day 9: Scaffold Inspection and Tagging

Objectives:
• Conduct pre-use and periodic inspections.
• Identify defects and non-conformances.
• Complete inspection records and scaffold tags.
• Understand the role of the competent person.
• Apply corrective actions for common faults.

• Inspection schedule: pre-use, weekly, after adverse weather.
• Inspection checklist: components, stability, loading.
• Defects: bent tubes, cracked welds, split boards.
• Tag system: green (safe), amber (caution), red (unsafe).
• Completing inspection reports.
• Competent person requirements per SANS.

Day 10: Integration, Assessment, and Certification

• Demonstrate competence in erection, alteration, and dismantling.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.
