SAQA US 119045 | NQF 2 | Credits 8 | Duration 5 Days
From $1,242 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge to safely fabricate, erect, and strip timber formwork for straight walls, columns, and bases in construction. It covers material selection, layout, assembly, and dismantling procedures, ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply relevant safety regulations and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements when working with timber formwork.
  • Interpret construction drawings and specifications to plan the layout of formwork for straight walls, columns, and bases.
  • Select appropriate timber materials, tools, and equipment for fabricating formwork components.
  • Demonstrate correct procedures for assembling, erecting, and aligning timber formwork to achieve specified dimensions and tolerances.
  • Implement stripping and dismantling techniques that preserve formwork integrity and ensure site safety.
  • Inspect and maintain formwork components, identifying defects and determining reusability.

Target Audience

This course is designed for construction workers, formwork carpenters, and site supervisors who are involved in concrete construction and require hands-on training in timber formwork for structural elements.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Timber Formwork and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the role and types of timber formwork in construction.
• Identify and apply relevant OHS regulations and site safety protocols.
• Recognize the components and materials used in timber formwork systems.
• Interpret basic drawings and specifications for formwork.
• Demonstrate safe handling and storage of timber and tools.

Topics:
• Overview of formwork in concrete construction
• Types of formwork: traditional and engineered systems
• Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) requirements
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) and site hazards
• Timber species, grades, and common sizes
• Formwork components: panels, walers, soldiers, ties, and props
• Reading formwork layout drawings
• Tool identification: saws, hammers, levels, measuring tapes

Day 2: Planning and Layout for Straight Walls and Columns

Objectives:
• Calculate material quantities and plan formwork layout.
• Set out and mark positions for walls and columns.
• Prepare formwork panels and assemble basic components.
• Apply principles of alignment, plumb, and level.
• Understand formwork design loads and bracing requirements.

Topics:
• Material take-off and cutting lists
• Setting out reference lines and datum points
• Marking column and wall positions on site
• Panel fabrication: cutting, drilling, and assembling

Day 3: Erecting Formwork for Bases and Columns

Objectives:
• Erect formwork for concrete bases (footings/pad foundations).
• Erect formwork for square and rectangular columns.
• Install form ties and spacers correctly.
• Ensure formwork is square, plumb, and adequately braced.
• Apply release agents to prevent concrete adhesion.

Topics:
• Base formwork: side forms, stakes, and bracing
• Column formwork: clad panels, clamps, and ties
• Installing form ties and spreaders
• Squaring and plumbing columns
• Bracing columns against lateral forces
• Application of form release agents
• Inspection checklist before concreting

Day 4: Erecting Formwork for Straight Walls and Stripping

Objectives:
• Erect formwork for straight walls of varying heights.
• Install alignment systems and waler assemblies.
• Understand concrete placement and compaction effects on formwork.
• Demonstrate stripping procedures for walls, columns, and bases.
• Inspect and clean formwork after stripping.

Topics:
• Wall formwork erection: panels, ties, and walers
• Alignment systems: adjustable props and turnbuckles
• Pouring windows and access points
• Monitoring formwork during concrete placement
• Stripping times: factors affecting concrete strength
• Sequential stripping: sides first, then soffits
• Cleaning and oiling formwork for reuse
• Defect identification and repair of formwork

Day 5: Quality Control, Troubleshooting, and Practical Integration

Objectives:

Topics:
• Quality control: tolerances, alignment, and surface finish
• Troubleshooting: bulging, misalignment, and leaks
• Full-scale practical: erect and strip wall and column formwork
• Team roles and communication on site
• Documentation: daily reports, inspection sheets
• Handover to concreting team
• Final assessment and feedback
• Course summary and certification

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 30%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 70%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
