Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Roof Covering and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the scope and requirements of roof covering installation.
• Identify relevant safety regulations and personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Recognise common roof covering materials and tools.
• Apply basic risk assessment principles on site.

Topics:
• Overview of roof covering types: tiles, sheeting, and shingles.
• Introduction to SANS 10400 and OHS Act requirements.
• PPE selection and inspection.
• Tool identification: hammers, levels, cutters, and fasteners.
• Site safety induction and hazard identification.
• Basic first aid and emergency procedures.
• Material handling and storage basics.
• Documentation: site instructions and material data sheets.

Day 2: Substrate Preparation and Underlayment

Objectives:
• Inspect and prepare roof substrates for covering installation.
• Select and install underlayment materials correctly.
• Understand ventilation and waterproofing principles.
• Apply batten and counter-batten installation techniques.

Topics:
• Substrate types: timber trusses, steel frames, and concrete decks.
• Inspection for levelness, structural integrity, and moisture content.
• Underlayment types: synthetic, bituminous, and breather membranes.
• Installation methods: overlapping, fixing, and sealing.
• Ventilation requirements for roof spaces.
• Batten and counter-batten spacing calculations.
• Fixing battens: fasteners, alignment, and gauge.
• Quality checks for underlayment and battens.

Day 3: Roof Tile Installation – Clay and Concrete Tiles

Objectives:
• Differentiate between clay and concrete roof tiles.
• Install tiles according to manufacturer specifications.
• Apply correct tile clipping and fixing methods.
• Install ridge, hip, and valley tiles.

Topics:
• Tile profiles: plain, interlocking, and double-lap.
• Laying patterns: staggered and straight courses.
• Cutting tiles: tools and techniques.
• Fixing methods: nails, clips, and mortar.
• Ridge and hip tile installation: bedding and pointing.
• Valley tile installation: lead or fibre cement valleys.
• Eaves and verge detailing.
• Quality inspection: alignment, overlap, and weatherproofing.

Day 4: Metal Roof Sheeting Installation

Objectives:
• Identify types of metal roof sheeting and profiles.
• Install sheeting with correct overlaps and fasteners.
• Apply flashings and closures for weatherproofing.
• Understand thermal movement and fixing patterns.

Topics:
• Sheet profiles: corrugated, trapezoidal, and standing seam.
• Material types: galvanised steel, Colorbond, and aluminium.
• Laying sequence: bottom to top, end laps, side laps.
• Fasteners: self-drilling screws, washers, and spacing.
• Flashings: ridge, barge, apron, and valley.
• Closures: foam, rubber, and metal.
• Thermal expansion considerations.
• Safety: walking on metal roofs and fall protection.

Day 5: Roof Shingle Installation – Asphalt and Fibre Cement

Objectives:
• Differentiate between asphalt and fibre cement shingles.
• Install shingles with proper overlap and nailing patterns.
• Apply starter course and ridge shingles.
• Understand underlayment requirements for shingle roofs.

Topics:
• Shingle types: strip, individual, and laminated.
• Underlayment for shingles: felt, synthetic, or ice and water shield.
• Starter course installation: alignment and overhang.
• Nailing patterns: nail type, length, and placement.
• Field shingle installation: exposure, stagger, and alignment.
• Ridge and hip shingles: cutting and fixing.
• Valley flashing integration.
• Ventilation accessories for shingle roofs.

Day 6: Roof Penetrations and Flashing Details

Objectives:
• Install flashings around roof penetrations (pipes, vents, chimneys).
• Apply correct lead, aluminium, or flexible flashing techniques.
• Understand waterproofing at intersections.
• Install skylights and roof windows.

Topics:
• Types of penetrations: plumbing stacks, vents, chimneys, and skylights.
• Flashing materials: lead, aluminium, copper, and rubber.
• Step flashing for vertical walls.
• Chimney flashing: base, step, and counter flashing.
• Pipe flashings: rubber boots and lead sleeves.
• Skylight installation: curbs, flashing, and sealing.
• Roof window installation: integrated flashing kits.
• Testing for water tightness.

Day 7: Roof Drainage, Gutters, and Downpipes

Objectives:
• Install gutters and downpipes to ensure effective drainage.
• Understand fall and outlet positioning.
• Apply jointing and fixing methods.
• Install leaf guards and accessories.

Topics:
• Gutter profiles: half-round, square, and box.
• Gutter materials: PVC, steel, and aluminium.
• Fall calculation and bracket spacing.
• Gutter installation: cutting, joining, and fixing.
• Downpipe installation: outlets, elbows, and connections.
• Rainwater heads and sumps.
• Leaf guards and gutter mesh.
• Testing for leaks and blockages.

Day 8: Quality Control, Defects, and Repairs

Objectives:
• Identify common installation defects and their causes.
• Perform quality inspections on completed roof areas.
• Execute repairs on damaged tiles, sheeting, or flashings.
• Understand warranty conditions and documentation.

Topics:
• Defects: misalignment, improper overlaps, fastener issues.
• Inspection tools: straightedge, level, moisture meter.
• Repair techniques: replacing tiles, patching sheeting, resealing.
• Leak detection methods.
• Manufacturer warranty requirements.
• Site documentation: checklists, photos, and sign-offs.
• Customer handover procedures.
• Maintenance tips for roof longevity.

Day 9: Practical Integration and Assessment

Objectives:
• Demonstrate integrated roof installation on a mock-up.
• Apply all learned skills in a practical scenario.
• Complete a final quality inspection and report.
• Prepare for unit standard assessment.

Topics:
• Practical project: install a complete roof section including tiles, underlayment, flashings, and gutters.
• Team coordination and task allocation.
• Tool and material management.
• Safety compliance during the project.
• Final inspection and defect rectification.
• Completion of quality documentation.
• Review of unit standard outcomes.
• Summative assessment: theory and practical.

Practicals

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
