This course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills to safely and efficiently operate heavy on-track maintenance machines used in railway infrastructure maintenance. Learners will understand machine controls, safety protocols, and operational procedures to ensure track integrity and workplace safety.

Target Audience

This course is designed for railway maintenance personnel, machine operators, and supervisors responsible for operating or overseeing heavy on-track maintenance machinery on rail networks.

Prerequisites

Valid driver's license and previous experience in railway or heavy machinery operation recommended. None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Heavy On-Track Maintenance Machines

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and types of heavy on-track maintenance machines.
• Identify key components and their functions.
• Recognize safety hazards associated with track maintenance operations.
• Explain the role of the operator in maintaining track integrity.
• Overview of relevant legislation and standards.

Day 2: Safety and Risk Management

Objectives:
• Identify and assess risks specific to on-track machine operation.
• Apply safe working practices during machine setup and operation.
• Understand emergency procedures and first aid basics.
• Demonstrate proper use of PPE and safety devices.
• Comply with railway safety rules and communication protocols.

• Machine-specific hazards: moving parts, high pressure, electrical.

Day 3: Machine Inspection and Pre-Operational Checks

• Verify safety systems: lights, horns, brakes, emergency stops.
• Identify common defects and report accordingly.

Day 4: Controls and Basic Operation

• Operate auxiliary systems (e.g., work lights, wipers).

Day 5: Operating Principles of Tamping Machines

Objectives:
• Explain the purpose of tamping in track maintenance.
• Describe the tamping cycle: insertion, squeeze, lift.
• Adjust tamping depth and pressure settings.
• Operate tamping controls under supervision.
• Recognize correct tamping quality and common faults.

Day 6: Operating Principles of Ballast Regulators

• Perform sweeping and profiling operations.

Day 7: Operating Principles of Dynamic Track Stabilizers

Overview

The practical component is essential for developing hands-on competency in operating heavy on-track maintenance machines. Learners will practice pre-operational checks, machine maneuvering, tamping, regulating, and stabilization under supervision, ensuring they can safely and effectively perform track maintenance tasks.

Practical Activities
  • Pre-Operational Checks and Basic Maneuvering — Learners conduct full pre-start inspections and practice basic machine controls, including starting, stopping, steering, and parking in a controlled yard. (8h)
  • Tamping Machine Operation — Learners operate a tamping machine on a designated track section, adjusting parameters and performing tamping cycles to correct track geometry. (16h)
  • Ballast Regulator and Stabilizer Operation — Learners operate a ballast regulator to distribute and shape ballast, then use a dynamic stabilizer to consolidate the track under supervision. (16h)
  • Integrated Maintenance Scenario and Assessment — Learners work in teams to complete a full track maintenance cycle (tamping, regulating, stabilizing) on a simulated worksite, culminating in a practical assessment. (16h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
