Description

This course equips learners with the competence to operate road-rail vehicles and associated hydraulic equipment safely and effectively in the South African rail environment. It covers pre-operational checks, operational procedures, and maintenance of hydraulic systems, ensuring compliance with relevant safety legislation and industry standards. Successful learners will be able to demonstrate the skills required to perform tasks such as vehicle positioning, coupling, and basic troubleshooting.

Target Audience

This training is intended for individuals who operate or intend to operate road-rail vehicles and hydraulic equipment in railway, construction, or maintenance settings, including machine operators, yard personnel, and maintenance staff.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, learners must be physically fit and able to operate heavy machinery.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Road Rail Vehicles and Hydraulic Systems

Objectives:
• Understand the scope and context of road rail vehicles in South Africa.
• Identify key components of road rail vehicles and hydraulic systems.
• Recognise relevant legislation, standards, and safety requirements.
• Explain the basic principles of hydraulic power transmission.

• Fundamental hydraulic principles: Pascal's law, flow, pressure.
• Components: pumps, valves, cylinders, motors, filters, reservoirs.
• Introduction to Unit Standard 119983 and SAQA requirements.
• Health and safety legislation: OHS Act, relevant regulations.
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices.

Day 2: Hydraulic System Components and Functions

Objectives:
• Describe the function of each major hydraulic component.
• Differentiate between various types of pumps, valves, and actuators.
• Interpret hydraulic symbols and simple circuit diagrams.
• Identify common component configurations in road rail vehicles.

Topics:
• Hydraulic pumps: gear, vane, piston – characteristics and selection.
• Control valves: directional, pressure, flow control.
• Actuators: cylinders (single/double acting), hydraulic motors.
• Ancillary components: filters, coolers, accumulators, gauges.
• Hydraulic symbols and schematic reading.
• Component layout on typical road rail vehicles.

Day 3: Hydraulic Circuits and System Operation

Objectives:
• Trace fluid flow through basic hydraulic circuits.
• Explain the operation of common circuits: regenerative, sequencing, counterbalance.
• Calculate pressure, flow, and force relationships.
• Describe the function of relief valves and pressure compensators.

• Basic hydraulic circuits: meter-in, meter-out, bleed-off.
• Regenerative circuits for speed enhancement.
• Sequencing and synchronising circuits.
• Counterbalance and pilot-operated check valves.
• Pressure control: relief, reducing, unloading valves.
• Practical calculations: force, speed, power.

Day 4: Road Rail Vehicle Systems and Controls

Objectives:
• Identify the main systems of a road rail vehicle: drive, steering, braking, hydraulic.
• Explain the interface between road and rail modes.
• Describe the function of hydraulic controls for rail operation.
• Understand the role of load sensing and flow sharing.

Topics:
• Road mode vs. rail mode: changeover mechanisms.
• Steering systems: front axle, rear axle, crab steer.
• Braking systems: service, parking, emergency – hydraulic and pneumatic.
• Hydraulic drive for rail wheels: traction and speed control.
• Load sensing hydraulic systems for efficiency.
• Operator controls: joysticks, pedals, switches.

Day 5: Pre-Operational Checks and Maintenance Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Perform daily pre-start inspections according to manufacturer guidelines.
• Identify common fluid contamination issues and their effects.
• Explain basic hydraulic maintenance tasks: filter changes, fluid sampling.
• Understand the importance of proper fluid selection and condition.

• Pre-start inspection checklist: visual, fluid levels, leaks, damage.
• Hydraulic fluid types, viscosity grades, and additives.
• Contamination control: sources, measurement (ISO codes), filtration.
• Routine maintenance: filter replacement, breather checks, hose inspection.

Day 6: Safe Operation of Road Rail Vehicles

• Apply safe operating procedures for road and rail modes.
• Demonstrate correct use of warning devices and signals.
• Identify hazards specific to road-rail operations.
• Understand site-specific safety rules and emergency procedures.

• Operating procedures: entering/exiting rail tracks, level crossings.
• Hazard identification: overhead lines, track conditions, other traffic.
• Warning systems: lights, horns, flags, radios.
• Safe speeds and stopping distances on rail.
• Emergency procedures: brake failure, derailment, fire.
• Personal safety: correct PPE, safe access/egress.

Day 7: Practical Operation – Basic Maneuvers

Objectives:
• Start and move the vehicle safely in road mode.
• Transition between road and rail modes under supervision.
• Execute basic rail maneuvers: forward, reverse, stop.
• Use hydraulic controls for auxiliary functions (e.g., stabilisers).

• Practical session: vehicle familiarisation, controls layout.
• Engine start, pre-op checks, moving off in road mode.
• Rail mode engagement: procedure and safety checks.
• Basic rail driving: straight line, stopping, reversing.
• Hydraulic function operation: stabilisers, booms (if applicable).

Day 8: Advanced Maneuvers and Coupling Operations

Objectives:
• Perform coupling and uncoupling with rail wagons using hydraulic couplers.
• Execute shunting maneuvers: pushing, pulling, positioning.
• Operate hydraulic systems for load handling (e.g., cranes, tippers).
• Understand weight distribution and load limits.

• Coupling types: automatic, manual, hydraulic.
• Coupling procedure: alignment, connection, air/electrical lines.
• Shunting techniques: pushing loads, spotting wagons.
• Hydraulic load handling: crane operation, tipper controls.

Day 9: Troubleshooting Hydraulic Systems

Objectives:
• Diagnose common hydraulic faults: noise, overheating, slow operation.
• Use pressure gauges and flow meters to test system performance.
• Identify causes of component failure: contamination, wear, misalignment.
• Apply systematic troubleshooting procedures.

• Pressure testing: relief valve setting, pressure drop across components.
• Flow testing: pump output, cylinder speed.
• Temperature issues: causes of overheating, coolers.

Day 10: Practical Maintenance and Component Replacement

• Replace hydraulic filters and perform fluid top-up correctly.
• Remove and install hydraulic hoses and fittings.
• Bleed air from hydraulic systems after maintenance.
• Adjust pressure settings within safe limits.

• Filter replacement: location, type, correct procedure.
• Hose replacement: selection, routing, torque specifications.
• Fittings: O-rings, flare, quick-connect – inspection and installation.
• Air bleeding: manual and automatic methods.

Day 11: Operational Planning and Site Safety

• Plan a safe route and work schedule for road-rail operations.
• Conduct risk assessments and implement control measures.
• Communicate effectively with site personnel and rail traffic controllers.
• Respond to emergency scenarios: spills, fires, injuries.

• Job planning: route assessment, track possession, permits.
• Risk assessment: identifying hazards, evaluating risk, controls.
• Communication protocols: radio, hand signals, light signals.
• Emergency response: first aid, fire extinguisher use, spill containment.

Day 12: Practical Application – Complex Tasks

• Demonstrate proper load handling and stabilisation.

Day 13: Regulatory Compliance and Documentation

Objectives:
• Complete required operational logs and maintenance records.
• Understand the role of the South African Rail Safety Regulator.
• Identify relevant standards: SANS, ISO, manufacturer specifications.
• Prepare a vehicle for inspection or audit.

• Logbooks: daily checks, defects, hours of service.
• Maintenance records: service intervals, parts replaced.
• Regulatory bodies: RSR, DOL, SABS.
• Standards: SANS 3000 series, ISO 4413.

Day 14: Assessment Preparation and Review

• Understand the assessment criteria and process.

• Review of safe operating procedures and regulations.
• Practical skills practice: maneuvers, coupling, maintenance.
• Mock assessment: written test and practical demonstration.
• Feedback and individual coaching.
• Final Q&A session.

Day 15: Final Assessment and Certification

Objectives:
• Complete the theoretical assessment (written or oral).
• Demonstrate practical competence in all required areas.
• Receive feedback on performance.
• Understand post-training responsibilities and continuous development.

• Written assessment: multiple choice, short answer.
• Practical assessment: pre-op checks, rail operation, hydraulic use, troubleshooting.
• Oral questioning to confirm understanding.
• Assessment debrief: results, areas for improvement.
• Issuance of certificate of competence (if passed).
• Guidance on logbook completion and future training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
