Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Soil and Gravel Sampling

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and importance of soil and gravel sampling for laboratory testing.
• Identify different types of soil and gravel and their engineering properties.
• Explain the role of sampling in construction and civil engineering projects.
• Recognize relevant South African standards and regulations (e.g., SANS, SAQA).

• Introduction to SANS and other relevant standards
• Health and safety considerations in sampling

Day 2: Sampling Equipment and Tools

Objectives:
• List and describe common soil and gravel sampling equipment.
• Demonstrate correct use of hand tools (augers, shovels, scoops).
• Understand the use of mechanical equipment (tripod, split spoon sampler).
• Perform pre-use checks and maintenance of equipment.

• Split spoon samplers and Shelby tubes

Day 3: Sampling Methods and Techniques

• Execute bulk sampling, grab sampling, and composite sampling.
• Understand the importance of sample integrity and minimizing disturbance.

Day 4: Sampling Location and Strategy

• Transport samples safely and in compliance with regulations.

Day 6: Field Testing and In-Situ Measurements

• Perform basic field tests to characterize soil and gravel.
• Use in-situ testing equipment correctly.
• Interpret field test results for preliminary classification.
• Integrate field testing with sampling procedures.

Day 7: Laboratory Testing Overview and Sample Preparation

• Describe common laboratory tests for soil and gravel.
• Prepare samples for laboratory testing according to standards.
• Understand the importance of sample splitting and reduction.
• Coordinate with laboratory personnel for test requirements.

• Overview of laboratory tests: grading, Atterberg limits, compaction, CBR, triaxial
• Sample preparation: air drying, crushing, sieving
• Sample splitting methods (riffle box, quartering)
• Moisture conditioning for compaction tests

Day 8: Quality Assurance, Documentation, and Reporting

Objectives:
• Implement quality assurance procedures in sampling.
• Maintain accurate and complete records.
• Prepare sampling reports and interpret results.
• Understand the importance of traceability and repeatability.

• QA/QC in sampling: duplicates, blanks, and control samples

Day 9: Practical Integration and Assessment

Objectives:
• Conduct a complete sampling exercise from planning to reporting.
• Demonstrate proficiency in all sampling stages.
• Complete a written assessment covering theory and practice.
• Receive feedback and identify areas for improvement.

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
