Structural Steel Project Contract Planning Workshop Procedures Training

SAQA US 114221 | NQF 5 | Credits 5 | Duration 2 Days
From $832 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the skills to plan and manage structural steel project contracts effectively. Participants will learn to interpret contract documentation, apply workshop procedures, and ensure compliance with project specifications. The training focuses on practical planning techniques to optimise resource allocation and minimise project risks.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply contract planning principles to structural steel projects, including scope definition and work breakdown structures.
  • Analyse project specifications and contract documentation to identify key deliverables and constraints.
  • Evaluate workshop procedures and resource requirements to develop realistic project schedules.
  • Implement quality and safety standards in accordance with contractual obligations and industry regulations.
  • Demonstrate effective communication and coordination with stakeholders during contract execution.
  • Assess project risks and develop mitigation strategies to ensure timely and cost-effective completion.

Target Audience

This course is designed for project managers, site supervisors, contract administrators, and estimators working in structural steel fabrication and construction. It is also suitable for aspiring professionals seeking to enhance their contract planning competencies.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, prior experience in the structural steel industry is recommended.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundational Principles of Structural Steel Project Contract Planning

Objectives:
• Understand the regulatory and contractual framework governing structural steel projects.
• Identify key planning processes and documentation requirements.
• Apply workshop procedures to ensure compliance with project specifications.
• Analyse risk factors and develop mitigation strategies for steel fabrication and erection.

Topics:
• Overview of structural steel project lifecycle and contract types.
• Relevant SAQA unit standards and industry regulations (SANS, OHSA).
• Contract documentation: scope of work, specifications, bills of quantities.
• Workshop procedures: material handling, cutting, welding, and assembly.
• Quality control and inspection protocols.
• Risk assessment and safety planning for structural steel works.

Day 2: Advanced Planning and Practical Integration for Steel Projects

Objectives:
• Develop detailed project schedules and resource plans for steel fabrication and erection.
• Coordinate workshop and site activities to optimise productivity.
• Implement quality assurance and documentation procedures.
• Evaluate project outcomes against contract requirements and standards.

Topics:
• Critical path method and resource levelling for steel projects.
• Procurement and logistics: ordering, delivery, and storage of steel.
• Integration of workshop procedures with site erection plans.
• Non-destructive testing and certification requirements.
• Progress monitoring, reporting, and variation management.
• Case studies: successful and problematic steel project planning.

Practicals

8 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Practical sessions enable learners to apply contract planning and workshop procedures to realistic structural steel scenarios. Through simulated exercises, learners develop schedules, conduct risk assessments, and complete documentation as per industry standards.

Practical Activities
  • Contract Document Review and Planning Exercise — Learners review a sample structural steel contract and extract key planning requirements, then create a preliminary project plan. (2h)
  • Workshop Procedure Simulation — In a simulated workshop environment, learners plan and execute a sequence of fabrication steps for a steel beam assembly, following standard procedures. (3h)
  • Risk Assessment and Mitigation Planning — Learners conduct a risk assessment for a steel erection scenario and develop a risk register with mitigation measures. (2h)
  • Integrated Project Planning and Review — Teams consolidate their work from previous sessions into a coherent project plan and present it for peer and facilitator review. (1h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
