Day 1: Introduction to Construction Plant and Equipment Management

• Describe the roles and responsibilities of a supervisor in controlling plant use.

• Supervisor duties: planning, coordination, and compliance
• Types of plant: earthmoving, lifting, compaction, concrete equipment

Day 2: Pre-Operational Checks and Maintenance Planning

Objectives:
• Conduct pre-operational inspections and understand daily checklists.
• Plan routine maintenance schedules to minimise downtime.
• Identify common defects and implement corrective actions.
• Apply record-keeping procedures for plant condition and service history.

Topics:
• Daily, weekly, and monthly inspection checklists
• Fluid levels, tyre pressures, brake systems, and safety devices
• Maintenance planning: preventive vs. reactive maintenance
• Reporting defects: communication channels and urgency levels
• Logbook management and digital tracking tools
• Case study: analysing a maintenance failure

Day 3: Safe Operation and Operator Competency

Objectives:
• Evaluate operator competency through practical observation.
• Implement safe operating procedures for various equipment.
• Control access to plant and ensure proper authorisation.
• Manage site-specific risks like ground conditions and overhead hazards.

• Operator competence assessment: licences, training records, and practical tests
• Safe operating procedures: start-up, operation, shutdown
• Site-specific risk controls: excavations, slopes, power lines
• Permit-to-work systems for high-risk activities
• Supervision of multiple equipment on congested sites

Day 4: Monitoring Performance and Productivity

Objectives:
• Monitor plant utilisation and productivity metrics.
• Identify inefficiencies and implement corrective measures.
• Use data from telematics and onboard systems for decision-making.
• Apply cost control principles to equipment operation.

• Key performance indicators: utilisation rate, fuel consumption, cycle times
• Telematics: real-time tracking, geofencing, and diagnostics
• Productivity analysis: idle time, delays, and bottlenecks
• Fuel management: theft prevention, efficient driving techniques
• Cost per hour calculations and budgeting
• Case study: improving productivity on a road construction site

Day 5: Incident Management and Emergency Procedures

Objectives:
• Respond to plant-related incidents and emergencies effectively.
• Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
• Manage breakdowns and recovery operations safely.
• Ensure compliance with incident reporting requirements.

• Emergency response plans: fire, rollover, collision, entrapment
• First aid and rescue considerations for plant incidents
• Root cause analysis techniques: 5 Whys, fishbone diagram
• Breakdown procedures: isolation, lockout/tagout, towing
• Incident reporting: forms, timelines, and legal obligations
• Lessons learned and continuous improvement

Day 6: Integration, Assessment, and Certification

Objectives:
• Synthesise all learning into a comprehensive supervision plan.
• Demonstrate competence through practical and written assessments.
• Develop a personal action plan for workplace implementation.
• Understand certification requirements and ongoing professional development.

• Review of key concepts and integration exercise
• Practical assessment: supervisor scenario simulation
• Written assessment: knowledge test covering all days
• Feedback session and corrective guidance
• Certification process: portfolio of evidence, sign-off
• Action planning: applying learning to own work environment

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
