Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills required to safely and effectively unblock and maintain wastewater pipes. It covers the principles of wastewater systems, common blockage causes, and appropriate tools and techniques for unblocking and preventive maintenance. Emphasis is placed on health, safety, and environmental considerations in line with South African regulations.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Wastewater Systems and Blockages

Objectives:
• Understand the components and layout of a typical wastewater system
• Identify common causes and types of blockages
• Recognize the impact of blockages on public health and the environment
• Apply basic safety principles when working with wastewater
• Use relevant terminology in the context of wastewater maintenance

• Overview of wastewater collection systems (gravity mains, manholes, laterals)
• Common causes of blockages: grease, solids, roots, debris, pipe defects
• Types of blockages: partial, complete, fatbergs, siltation
• Health and environmental hazards of wastewater blockages
• Safety protocols: PPE, confined space awareness, hazard identification
• Introduction to relevant regulations and standards (SAQA, SANS)

Day 2: Pipe Materials and System Design Principles

Objectives:
• Identify different pipe materials and their properties
• Understand hydraulic principles affecting flow and blockages
• Recognize signs of pipe deterioration and failure
• Apply knowledge of pipe sizing and gradients to maintenance
• Use tools to assess pipe condition

Topics:
• Pipe materials: PVC, concrete, HDPE, clay, ductile iron
• Pipe joints, fittings, and connections
• Hydraulic principles: flow rate, velocity, self-cleansing velocity
• Factors affecting blockage formation: gradient, diameter, roughness
• Pipe condition assessment: visual inspection, CCTV basics
• Common defects: cracks, misalignment, infiltration, corrosion

Day 3: Mechanical Blockage Removal Equipment and Techniques

Objectives:
• Describe mechanical equipment used for unblocking pipes
• Demonstrate safe setup and operation of rodding and augering equipment
• Select appropriate tools for different blockage types
• Perform basic rodding and augering procedures
• Troubleshoot common equipment issues

• Types of mechanical cleaners: hand rods, electric snakes, sectional machines
• Cutting and retrieval tools: cutters, augers, grabs
• Equipment setup, operation, and safety checks
• Techniques for different blockages: grease, roots, solids

Day 4: High-Pressure Water Jetting and Hydrodynamic Cleaning

Objectives:
• Explain the principles of hydrodynamic cleaning
• Identify components and specifications of jetting equipment
• Demonstrate safe operation of jetting units
• Select appropriate nozzles and pressures for different applications
• Perform jetting to remove blockages and clean pipe walls

• Principles of water jetting: pressure, flow, nozzle design
• Jetting equipment: truck-mounted units, trailer units, accessories
• Nozzle types: forward, rear, rotating, specialty
• Safety procedures: hose handling, pressure relief, personal protective equipment
• Jetting techniques for blockages, descaling, and flushing
• Environmental considerations: water containment, waste disposal

Day 5: Drainage Network Inspection and CCTV

Objectives:
• Understand the role of CCTV in diagnosing blockages
• Operate CCTV inspection equipment safely
• Interpret CCTV footage to identify blockages and defects
• Document findings using standard report forms
• Recommend appropriate remedial actions based on inspection

• CCTV system components: camera, cable, monitor, recording
• Inspection procedures: setup, insertion, retrieval
• Identifying blockages: location, nature, severity
• Identifying pipe defects: cracks, root intrusion, joint displacement
• Reporting and documentation: defect coding, photo logs

Day 6: Chemical and Biological Blockage Treatment Methods

Objectives:
• Describe chemical agents used for unblocking and maintenance
• Apply safety precautions when handling chemicals
• Understand biological treatment options for grease and organic buildup
• Select appropriate chemical or biological method for specific scenarios
• Assess environmental and regulatory compliance

• Chemical cleaners: caustics, acids, solvents, oxidizers
• Safety: Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), PPE, spill response
• Biological additives: bacteria, enzymes for grease digestion
• Application methods: dosing, foaming, soaking

Day 7: Preventive Maintenance and Pipeline Rehabilitation

• Develop a preventive maintenance schedule for wastewater pipes

• Evaluate cost-benefit of preventive vs. reactive maintenance

Day 8: Emergency Response and Complex Blockage Scenarios

Objectives:
• Develop an emergency response plan for major blockages
• Coordinate with municipal and emergency services
• Handle complex blockages: fatbergs, collapsed pipes, multiple blockages
• Apply advanced techniques for difficult situations
• Communicate effectively with stakeholders during emergencies

• Advanced techniques: combination jetting and vacuum, bypass pumping

Day 9: Integrated Practical Application and Assessment

Objectives:
• Integrate all skills learned in a simulated real-world scenario
• Perform end-to-end blockage diagnosis and clearance
• Demonstrate safe work practices throughout
• Complete documentation and report on activities
• Prepare for unit standard assessment

• Simulated blockage scenario: diagnose using CCTV, select method, clear
• Practical assessment: rodding, jetting, chemical application

Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are essential for learners to develop competence in operating unblocking equipment, conducting inspections, and applying maintenance techniques. These sessions simulate real-world conditions and ensure learners can safely and effectively perform tasks required by the unit standard.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Mechanical Rodding and Augering — Learners set up and operate manual and electric rodding equipment to clear simulated blockages in test pipes. They practice selecting appropriate tools and troubleshooting common issues. (8h)
  • Practical 2: High-Pressure Water Jetting — Learners operate jetting units with various nozzles to remove grease, silt, and root intrusions from pipes. They practice pressure adjustment and safe hose handling. (8h)
  • Practical 3: CCTV Inspection and Reporting — Learners conduct CCTV inspections of pipes with pre-placed defects and blockages. They record footage, interpret findings, and complete standard inspection reports. (6h)
  • Practical 4: Combined Techniques and Emergency Scenario — Learners respond to a simulated emergency blockage requiring multiple techniques: CCTV diagnosis, mechanical cutting, jetting, and chemical treatment. They work in teams under time constraints. (8h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
