Day 1: Introduction to Wastewater Pump Stations

• Explain the wastewater collection and conveyance process.

• SAQA Unit Standard 115955 and relevant regulations (e.g., Water Services Act).
• Types of pump stations (wet well/dry well, submersible).
• Primary components: pumps, motors, valves, piping, wet wells, control panels.
• Health, safety, and environmental considerations.
• Introduction to standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Day 2: Pump Station Hydraulics and Pump Principles

Objectives:
• Explain fundamental hydraulic principles relevant to pump stations.
• Describe different pump types and their operating characteristics.
• Calculate basic pump performance parameters.
• Interpret pump performance curves.

Topics:
• Fluid properties and basic hydraulics (head, flow, pressure).
• Types of pumps: centrifugal, positive displacement, submersible.
• Pump construction: impellers, casings, shafts, seals.
• Pump performance curves: head-capacity, efficiency, power.
• System head curves and pump selection.
• Cavitation and its prevention.

Day 3: Electrical Systems and Motor Control

Objectives:
• Identify electrical components and control systems in a pump station.
• Explain motor types, starters, and protection devices.
• Interpret basic electrical diagrams and control logic.
• Apply safe electrical isolation procedures (Lock-Out-Tag-Out).

• Electrical supply systems and distribution boards.
• Motor types (induction, synchronous) and specifications.
• Motor starters: Direct-On-Line (DOL), Star-Delta, Variable Speed Drives (VSDs).
• Control panels, relays, sensors (level, pressure, flow).

Day 4: Routine Operational Procedures

• Perform daily inspection and monitoring routines.
• Execute standard start-up and shut-down sequences.
• Monitor pump station performance against operational parameters.
• Complete accurate operational logs and checklists.

• Pre-start checks: visual inspection, lubrication, alignment.
• Step-by-step start-up and shut-down procedures.
• Monitoring key parameters: flow rates, pump pressures, motor currents, wet well levels.
• Data logging and record-keeping requirements.
• Responding to normal and high-flow conditions.
• Communication protocols during operations.

Day 5: Preventative Maintenance Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Develop and implement a preventative maintenance schedule.
• Perform routine lubrication, alignment, and cleaning tasks.
• Conduct basic mechanical inspections and measurements.
• Identify early signs of wear and component degradation.

• Principles of preventative vs. corrective maintenance.

• Initiate corrective actions for minor faults.

• Common electrical faults: overloads, phase failure, starter faults.
• Hydraulic issues: loss of prime, reduced flow, excessive head.

Day 7: Advanced Maintenance and Overhaul Procedures

Objectives:
• Plan and prepare for pump and component overhauls.
• Execute disassembly, inspection, and reassembly of pump components.
• Perform precision alignment and balancing procedures.
• Apply non-destructive testing techniques where applicable.

• Overhaul planning: risk assessments, permits, tools, and spares.
• Pump disassembly and component inspection.
• Impeller wear ring replacement and clearance adjustment.
• Shaft alignment methods (dial indicator, laser).
• Mechanical seal replacement and packing gland maintenance.

Day 8: Safety, Emergency Response, and Environmental Compliance

Objectives:
• Implement confined space entry and gas detection procedures.
• Respond to emergencies such as spills, overflows, and electrical incidents.
• Apply environmental protection measures and spill response.
• Conduct safety audits and incident investigations.

• Confined space regulations and entry permits.
• Hazardous atmosphere monitoring (H2S, methane, oxygen).

Day 9: Integration, Assessment, and Course Closure

• Participate in a final practical assessment of skills.
• Complete required theoretical assessments for Unit Standard 115955.
• Develop a personal action plan for workplace application.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
