Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Wastewater Reticulation Systems

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and components of wastewater reticulation systems
• Identify key legislation and standards governing wastewater systems in South Africa
• Describe the basic principles of wastewater flow and collection
• Recognise the roles and responsibilities of personnel in reticulation maintenance

Topics:
• Overview of wastewater reticulation systems and their importance
• South African legislation: SANS standards, Water Services Act, and local by-laws
• Basic hydraulic principles: gravity flow, pipe gradients, and flow rates
• System components: pipes, fittings, valves, manholes, and pump stations
• Safety protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE) in wastewater operations

Day 2: Wastewater Reticulation Pipes

Objectives:
• Differentiate between pipe materials used in wastewater reticulation
• Explain pipe sizing, pressure ratings, and jointing methods
• Identify common pipe defects and causes of failure
• Apply correct handling and storage procedures for pipes

Topics:
• Pipe materials: uPVC, HDPE, concrete, ductile iron, and GRP
• Pipe classes, nominal diameters, and pressure ratings (PN)
• Jointing methods: solvent cement welding, electrofusion, mechanical joints, and flanged connections
• Pipe installation: trenching, bedding, and backfilling requirements
• Common pipe defects: cracks, abrasion, chemical attack, and root intrusion
• Pipe handling, storage, and transport best practices

Day 3: Fittings for Wastewater Reticulation

Objectives:
• Identify various types of fittings and their applications
• Understand fitting materials and compatibility with pipes
• Describe correct installation techniques for fittings
• Recognise potential fitting failure modes and preventive measures

Topics:
• Types of fittings: bends, tees, reducers, couplings, adaptors, and saddles
• Material selection: matching fittings to pipe materials (e.g., uPVC fittings, HDPE electrofusion fittings)
• Installation techniques: solvent cement, mechanical, and flanged connections
• Fittings for special applications: flexible couplings, expansion joints, and repair clamps
• Common fitting failures: joint leaks, stress cracking, and improper alignment
• Quality control and testing of fittings

Day 4: Valves in Wastewater Systems

Objectives:
• Classify valves by function and design
• Explain the operation and application of common valve types
• Describe valve installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting
• Understand valve actuators and control systems

Topics:
• Valve types: gate valves, globe valves, butterfly valves, check valves, and air release valves
• Valve materials: cast iron, ductile iron, stainless steel, and coated valves
• Valve operation: manual, gear-operated, and automated actuators
• Installation: valve chambers, positioning, and isolation requirements
• Maintenance: packing, seat replacement, and lubrication
• Troubleshooting: leaks, sticking, and corrosion
• Air release and vacuum valves: function and sizing

Day 5: System Design and Hydraulic Considerations

Objectives:
• Apply hydraulic principles to reticulation system design
• Calculate flow rates, velocities, and pipe gradients
• Understand the role of manholes, pump stations, and storage
• Interpret system drawings and schematics

Topics:
• Hydraulic design: Manning's equation, flow velocity, and self-cleansing velocities
• Pipe sizing and gradient calculations for gravity systems
• Manhole design: spacing, drop manholes, and benching
• Pump stations: wet well design, pump types, and control systems
• Storage and overflow structures
• Reading and interpreting reticulation layout drawings and isometrics

Day 6: Installation, Testing, and Commissioning

Objectives:
• Outline procedures for pipe laying, jointing, and backfilling
• Describe pressure testing and leakage testing methods
• Understand commissioning requirements for new reticulation
• Implement safety measures during installation and testing

Topics:
• Pipe laying: alignment, gradient control, and support
• Jointing procedures: solvent cement, electrofusion, and mechanical joint assembly
• Backfilling: compaction requirements and testing
• Pressure testing: hydrostatic test procedures and acceptance criteria
• Leakage testing: water loss measurement and allowable leakage rates
• Commissioning: flushing, disinfection (if potable), and system handover
• Safety during installation: trench safety, confined space entry, and lifting operations

Day 7: Maintenance, Troubleshooting, and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Develop a preventive maintenance plan for reticulation systems
• Diagnose common operational problems and implement corrective actions
• Apply knowledge to real-world scenarios through case studies
• Demonstrate competence in reporting and documentation

Topics:
• Preventive maintenance: inspection schedules, cleaning, and valve exercising
• Troubleshooting: blockages, infiltration, exfiltration, and odour complaints
• Repair techniques: pipe bursting, relining, and spot repairs
• Emergency response: sewer overflows, burst pipes, and pump failures
• Case studies: typical reticulation challenges in South African municipalities
• Documentation: maintenance logs, incident reports, and asset registers
• Integration: linking pipes, fittings, and valves into a cohesive system management approach

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
