• Describe the basic flow of wastewater from source to treatment.

• Components: pipes, manholes, pumps, valves.
• South African water regulations (SANS, DWS guidelines).
• Health and safety induction (HIRA, PPE).
• Environmental impact and spill prevention.
• Basic hydraulics and flow principles.

Day 2: System Design and Layout Principles

Objectives:
• Interpret reticulation network layouts and schematics.
• Understand design criteria for pipes and fittings.
• Explain the role of gravity and pumping stations.
• Identify common layout configurations.

Topics:
• Reading reticulation plans and as-built drawings.
• Pipe materials (PVC, HDPE, concrete, ductile iron).
• Design criteria: flow rates, gradients, pipe sizing.
• Gravity vs. pressurised systems.
• Manhole types and spacing.
• Pump station components and siting.

Day 3: Safety Procedures and Risk Management

Objectives:
• Apply safety protocols for confined space entry.
• Conduct risk assessments for reticulation tasks.
• Use appropriate PPE and rescue equipment.
• Implement emergency response procedures.

• Confined space entry procedures (SANS 10089).
• Risk assessment methods (JSA, HIRA).
• PPE selection and inspection.
• Gas detection and ventilation.
• Rescue plans and equipment.
• Lockout/tagout (LOTO) for pumps and valves.

Day 4: Tools, Equipment, and Materials

Objectives:
• Identify tools for maintenance and repair.

• Operate basic equipment safely.
• Maintain tools and equipment.

• Hand tools: spanners, cutters, wrenches.
• Power tools: saws, drills, compactors.
• Pipe jointing methods (solvent weld, electrofusion, flanged).
• Pipe cutting and beveling tools.
• CCTV inspection equipment.
• Maintenance of tools and equipment records.

Day 5: Inspection and Condition Assessment

Objectives:
• Conduct visual inspections of reticulation assets.
• Use CCTV and other technologies for condition assessment.
• Identify defects and deterioration.
• Document inspection findings.

• Visual inspection of manholes, pipes, and structures.
• CCTV inspection techniques and interpretation.
• Defect coding (e.g., WRC defect codes).

Day 6: Preventive Maintenance Practices

• Develop a preventive maintenance schedule.

Day 7: Corrective Maintenance and Repairs

Day 9: Valve and Appurtenance Maintenance

• Washout and scour valves.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
