Description

This course provides learners with the essential skills and knowledge to install wastewater reticulation systems safely and in compliance with industry standards. Participants will learn to interpret technical specifications, prepare trenches, lay pipes, and conduct pressure tests. The training ensures that pipe-laying operations are executed efficiently, minimising environmental impact and adhering to municipal by-laws.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Wastewater Reticulation Systems and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and components of wastewater reticulation systems.
• Identify relevant legislation, standards, and codes of practice.
• Recognize health, safety, and environmental risks associated with pipe laying.
• Apply personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work procedures.

• Overview of wastewater reticulation systems
• Roles and responsibilities of a pipe layer
• Legal framework: OHS Act, SANS 1200, and municipal by-laws
• Hazard identification and risk assessment
• PPE requirements and emergency procedures
• Environmental considerations: spill prevention and erosion control

Day 2: Site Preparation and Surveying

Objectives:
• Interpret basic site plans and drawings.
• Perform site set-out and trench alignment.
• Identify underground services and apply safe digging practices.
• Establish temporary works and traffic management.

Topics:
• Reading construction drawings and symbols
• Setting out pipe routes using pegs and string lines
• Locating existing services (water, electricity, gas)
• Trench excavation methods and shoring requirements
• Dewatering techniques
• Traffic management and barricading

Day 3: Pipe Materials, Handling, and Storage

Objectives:
• Identify common pipe materials (uPVC, HDPE, concrete, ductile iron).
• Describe appropriate handling and storage methods.
• Inspect pipes for defects before installation.
• Understand pipe jointing systems and their applications.

Topics:
• Types of pipes: uPVC, HDPE, concrete, ductile iron
• Pipe dimensions, pressure ratings, and stiffness classes
• Safe lifting and manual handling techniques
• Storage requirements to prevent damage
• Jointing methods: rubber ring, solvent weld, electrofusion, flanged
• Quality checks and material rejection criteria

Day 4: Trench Preparation and Bedding

Objectives:
• Prepare trench bottom to required grade and alignment.
• Select and place bedding material according to specifications.
• Compact bedding to achieve required density.
• Install geotextile membranes if specified.

Topics:
• Trench bottom preparation: trimming and compaction
• Bedding types: granular, sand, and concrete cradle
• Compaction methods and testing (Proctor density)
• Geotextile placement for soil separation
• Laser leveling and grade checking
• Inspection and approval of bedding before pipe laying

Day 5: Pipe Laying and Jointing Techniques

Objectives:
• Lay pipes to correct line and grade using laser or string.
• Assemble pipe joints correctly for different materials.
• Install fittings, bends, and junctions.
• Conduct preliminary joint integrity checks.

Topics:
• Pipe laying sequence and alignment control
• Jointing uPVC pipes with rubber ring and solvent cement
• HDPE pipe butt fusion and electrofusion
• Concrete pipe jointing with mortar or rubber gaskets
• Installing bends, tees, and manhole connections
• Visual inspection and leak testing (low pressure air test)

Day 6: Ancillary Works and Special Installations

Objectives:
• Install manholes, inspection chambers, and cleanouts.
• Construct thrust blocks and anchorages.
• Lay pipes on slopes and across watercourses.
• Apply backfilling and compaction procedures.

Topics:
• Manhole construction: brickwork, precast, and in-situ
• Inspection chamber installation and benching
• Thrust blocks at bends and tees
• Pipe laying on steep gradients
• River crossings and trenchless techniques (basics)
• Backfilling in layers and compaction testing

Day 7: Testing, Commissioning, and Handover

Objectives:
• Conduct hydrostatic and/or air pressure tests.
• Carry out CCTV inspection and defect rectification.
• Complete as-built documentation.
• Demonstrate understanding of commissioning and handover procedures.

Topics:
• Hydrostatic pressure test procedure and acceptance criteria
• Air test for low-pressure systems
• CCTV inspection of pipe interior
• Defect identification and remedial actions
• As-built drawings and record keeping
• Disinfection and flushing (if applicable)
• Handover documentation and warranty

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
