Water Reticulation Concrete Work and Brick Masonry Training

SAQA US 254055 | NQF 2 | Credits 5 | Duration 2 Days
From $832 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to construct water reticulation concrete work and brick masonry in compliance with industry standards. Participants will learn to interpret engineering drawings, prepare materials, and execute concrete and masonry tasks essential for water reticulation systems. The training ensures safe and quality workmanship in a construction environment.

Learning Outcomes

  • Interpret and apply specifications and engineering drawings for water reticulation concrete and masonry structures.
  • Prepare concrete mixes and construct formwork, reinforcement, and concrete elements according to standards.
  • Lay bricks and blocks to construct water reticulation structures such as manholes, channels, and retaining walls.
  • Apply quality control measures to ensure concrete and masonry work meets required specifications.
  • Demonstrate safe working practices and comply with health and safety regulations on construction sites.

Target Audience

This course is designed for construction workers, artisans, and supervisors involved in water reticulation projects. It is also suitable for individuals seeking to formalize their skills in concrete and brick masonry within the water infrastructure sector.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Water Reticulation Concrete Work and Brick Masonry

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of water reticulation systems and the role of concrete and brick masonry.
• Identify materials, tools, and equipment used in concrete work and brick masonry for water reticulation.
• Describe safety requirements and quality standards for construction in water reticulation.
• Explain the process of preparing foundations and formwork for concrete structures.

Topics:
• Overview of water reticulation systems and components
• Materials: cement, aggregates, reinforcement, bricks, mortar
• Tools and equipment: mixers, trowels, levels, shovels
• Safety in construction: PPE, site hazards, safe handling of materials
• Quality standards: SANS 1200, SANS 2001, and relevant specifications
• Foundation preparation: excavation, compaction, blinding
• Formwork construction for concrete elements
• Introduction to brick masonry: types of bricks, bonding patterns

Day 2: Practical Application and Quality Control in Water Reticulation Structures

Objectives:
• Demonstrate the correct mixing, placing, and curing of concrete for water reticulation structures.
• Construct brick masonry elements such as valve chambers and meter boxes.
• Apply quality control measures and inspect completed work for compliance.
• Identify common defects and implement corrective actions.
• Integrate concrete and brickwork with water reticulation fittings and pipes.

Topics:
• Concrete mixing: proportions, slump test, workability
• Placing and compaction: vibration, avoiding segregation
• Curing methods: water, membrane, wet hessian
• Brick masonry construction: laying, jointing, bonding
• Integration with pipework: collars, sleeves, anchors
• Quality control: dimensional tolerance, level, plumb
• Defects: cracking, efflorescence, honeycombing
• Remedial actions and finishing

Practicals

8 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

The practicals provide hands-on experience in concrete mixing, placing, and curing, as well as brick masonry construction for water reticulation structures. Learners will apply theoretical knowledge to build a valve chamber, ensuring adherence to quality standards and safety procedures.

Practical Activities
  • Concrete Mixing and Slump Test — Learners mix a concrete batch according to a specified mix design and perform a slump test to assess workability. (2h)
  • Concrete Placing and Curing — Learners place concrete into a formwork for a small slab or base, compact using a vibrator, and apply a curing method. (2h)
  • Brick Masonry Construction of a Valve Chamber — Learners construct a small valve chamber using brick masonry, including laying bricks to a bond pattern and installing a pipe sleeve. (3h)
  • Quality Inspection and Defect Identification — Learners inspect completed concrete and brickwork, identify defects, and propose corrective actions. (1h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
