Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Electricity and Basic Concepts

Objectives:
• Define electricity and its fundamental principles
• Identify the basic components of an electrical circuit
• Explain the concepts of voltage, current, and resistance
• Describe the relationship between voltage, current, and resistance using Ohm's Law

Topics:
• What is electricity? (atoms, electrons, charge)
• Conductors, insulators, and semiconductors
• Electric circuits: open, closed, and short circuits
• Voltage, current, and resistance: definitions and units
• Ohm's Law: V=IR and its applications
• Electrical power: P=VI and energy calculations

Day 2: Circuit Analysis and Measurement

Objectives:
• Differentiate between series and parallel circuits
• Calculate total resistance, current, and voltage in series and parallel circuits
• Use a multimeter to measure voltage, current, and resistance safely
• Apply Kirchhoff's laws to simple circuits

Topics:
• Series circuits: characteristics and calculations
• Parallel circuits: characteristics and calculations
• Series-parallel combination circuits
• Kirchhoff's Voltage and Current Laws
• Introduction to circuit simulation software
• Electrical measurements: using a multimeter safely

Day 3: Electrical Components and Safety

Objectives:
• Identify common electrical components and their functions
• Understand the principles of electromagnetic induction
• Explain the purpose of fuses, circuit breakers, and earthing
• Apply electrical safety practices and regulations

Topics:
• Resistors, capacitors, inductors: symbols and functions
• Electromagnetic induction and transformers
• Switches, relays, and contactors
• Protection devices: fuses, circuit breakers, and RCDs
• Earthing and bonding
• Electrical safety: lockout/tagout, PPE, and safe working practices

Day 4: Alternating Current (AC) and Power Systems

Objectives:
• Explain the principles of alternating current
• Describe single-phase and three-phase power systems
• Calculate power in AC circuits (real, reactive, apparent)
• Identify the components of a basic electrical installation

Topics:
• AC vs DC: waveform, frequency, amplitude
• Single-phase systems: voltage, current, and power
• Three-phase systems: star and delta configurations
• Power factor and its correction
• Electrical installation components: distribution boards, wiring, sockets
• Introduction to renewable energy systems (solar, wind)

Day 5: Practical Applications and Troubleshooting

Objectives:
• Apply knowledge to wire a basic lighting circuit
• Diagnose and rectify common electrical faults
• Interpret electrical diagrams and schematics
• Demonstrate understanding of regulations and standards

Topics:
• Reading and interpreting electrical diagrams
• Wiring a lighting circuit with switches
• Troubleshooting common faults: open circuit, short circuit, overload
• Use of test instruments for fault finding
• Overview of SANS 10142-1 (Wiring of Premises)
• Career pathways in electrical engineering

Practicals

Overview

The practicals are essential for learners to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world electrical tasks. Through hands-on exercises, learners develop skills in circuit construction, measurement, and troubleshooting, ensuring competency in safe electrical practices.

Practical Activities
  • Circuit Construction and Measurement — Learners construct series and parallel circuits on breadboards and use multimeters to measure voltage, current, and resistance. (5h)
  • Component Identification and Testing — Learners identify various electrical components and test their functionality using a multimeter and component testers. (4h)
  • AC Circuit and Power Measurement — Learners set up simple AC circuits, measure voltage and current, and calculate power and power factor. (4h)
  • Wiring a Lighting Circuit — Learners wire a basic lighting circuit including a switch, lamp holder, and junction box following wiring regulations. (4h)
  • Fault Finding and Troubleshooting — Learners diagnose and rectify faults in pre-built circuits, such as open circuits, short circuits, and component failures. (3h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
