Install Under Surface Wireways And Draw In Conductors Training

SAQA US 119834 | NQF 1 | Credits 8 | Duration 5 Days
From $1,242 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the skills and knowledge required to install under surface wireways and draw in conductors safely and in compliance with South African electrical regulations. Participants will gain practical competence in preparing, installing, and testing wireways for electrical installations in industrial and commercial settings.

Learning Outcomes

  • Plan and prepare for the installation of under surface wireways in accordance with specifications and safety standards.
  • Install under surface wireways, including cutting, joining, and securing components, to ensure structural integrity and compliance.
  • Draw in conductors using appropriate tools and techniques to prevent damage and ensure correct routing.
  • Test and verify the installed wireways and conductors for continuity, insulation resistance, and compliance with regulations.
  • Apply relevant health, safety, and environmental procedures throughout the installation process.
  • Document and report installation activities and test results according to organizational and legal requirements.

Target Audience

This course is designed for electricians, electrical contractors, and maintenance personnel who need to install under surface wireways and draw in conductors as part of electrical reticulation or distribution systems.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Undersurface Wireways and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and types of undersurface wireways in electrical installations.
• Identify relevant safety regulations and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
• Explain the importance of compliance with SANS 10142-1 and other applicable standards.
• Recognize common hazards associated with undersurface wireway installation.
• Demonstrate knowledge of risk assessment procedures for installation tasks.

Topics:
• Overview of undersurface wireways: definition, applications, and benefits.
• Types of wireways: metallic, non-metallic, and hybrid systems.
• Relevant legislation and standards: OHSA, SANS 10142-1, and SAQA unit standards.
• Safety protocols: lockout/tagout, working in confined spaces, and electrical safety.
• PPE selection and inspection for wireway installation.
• Hazard identification and risk assessment (HIRA) for installation sites.
• Introduction to tools and equipment for wireway installation.

Day 2: Planning and Preparation for Wireway Installation

Objectives:
• Interpret installation drawings and specifications for undersurface wireways.
• Select appropriate wireway components based on application and environment.
• Plan cable routing and wireway layout to minimize bends and obstacles.
• Calculate material quantities and prepare a bill of materials.
• Coordinate with other trades to avoid conflicts during installation.

Topics:
• Reading and interpreting electrical installation diagrams and site plans.
• Selection criteria for wireway materials: corrosion resistance, load capacity, and ingress protection.
• Components: straight sections, elbows, tees, couplings, and supports.
• Cable pulling considerations: bend radius, fill ratio, and pulling tension.
• Material take-off and procurement procedures.
• Site survey and measurement techniques.
• Coordination with structural, plumbing, and other services.
• Documentation: work permits, method statements, and inspection checklists.

Day 3: Installation of Undersurface Wireways

Objectives:
• Install wireway supports and hangers according to manufacturer specifications.
• Assemble and secure wireway sections, including bends and junctions.
• Ensure proper alignment and level of wireways for cable drawing.
• Apply appropriate sealing and bonding for environmental protection.
• Conduct visual and dimensional inspections of installed wireways.

Topics:
• Support systems: clamps, brackets, trapeze hangers, and concrete inserts.
• Assembly techniques: joining sections, using couplings, and tightening fasteners.
• Installing bends and fittings: field-fabricated vs. factory-made.
• Achieving correct alignment: use of levels, string lines, and laser tools.

• Testing instruments: multimeters, meggers, and continuity testers.
• Insulation resistance testing: procedure and acceptable values.
• Polarity and phase sequence verification.
• As-built drawings and record keeping.
• Commissioning checklist and sign-off procedures.
• Safety during testing: de-energization and isolation verification.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 30%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 70%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
