Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Medium Voltage Transformer Installation

Objectives:
• Understand the principles and components of medium voltage transformers.
• Identify relevant safety regulations and standards (SANS, OHS Act).
• Describe pre-installation site assessment and preparation procedures.
• Explain transformer types, ratings, and nameplate data interpretation.

Topics:
• Introduction to medium voltage transformers: types, construction, and applications.
• Safety requirements: lockout/tagout, PPE, arc flash boundaries.
• Regulations and standards: SANS 10142-1, OHS Act, and manufacturer specifications.
• Site assessment: environmental conditions, access, and foundation requirements.
• Transformer nameplate data: voltage, kVA, impedance, and cooling class.
• Handling and storage: lifting points, oil preservation, and inspection upon receipt.
• Pre-installation testing: insulation resistance, winding resistance, and turns ratio.
• Documentation and quality control procedures.

Day 2: Installation Procedures and Electrical Connections

Objectives:
• Perform mechanical installation and alignment of transformers.
• Execute primary and secondary cable terminations and connections.
• Apply proper grounding and bonding techniques.
• Verify tap changer settings and auxiliary component connections.

Topics:
• Lifting and positioning: use of cranes, slings, and spreader bars.
• Foundation mounting: bolting, vibration pads, and leveling.
• Primary cable termination: stress cones, potheads, and cable lugs.
• Secondary connection: busbar and cable connections to switchgear.
• Grounding: neutral grounding resistor, ground grid, and bonding jumper.
• Tap changer operation: no-load and on-load tap changer adjustment.
• Auxiliary connections: cooling fans, temperature sensors, and alarms.
• Wiring of control circuits: RTDs, oil level indicators, and pressure relief devices.

Day 3: Testing, Commissioning, and Troubleshooting

Objectives:
• Conduct pre-commissioning tests and interpret results.
• Perform energization and load testing procedures.
• Identify common installation faults and apply corrective actions.
• Complete handover documentation and maintenance schedules.

Topics:
• Insulation testing: megger, PI, and DAR tests.
• Winding resistance and turns ratio verification.
• Power factor and capacitance testing.
• Oil testing: dielectric strength, moisture, and dissolved gas analysis.
• Energization procedure: step-by-step sequence and safety checks.
• Load testing: temperature rise and efficiency measurement.
• Troubleshooting: common issues like overheating, humming, and oil leaks.
• Handover: test reports, as-built drawings, and maintenance plan.

Practicals

Overview

Hands-on practicals are essential for electricians to develop safe and competent installation skills. Learners will practice transformer handling, cable termination, grounding, and testing in a controlled workshop environment, reinforcing theoretical knowledge and SAQA-aligned competencies.

Practical Activities
  • Transformer Inspection and Pre-Installation Checks — Learners inspect a medium voltage transformer, interpret nameplate data, perform visual checks, and measure insulation resistance using a megohmmeter. (2h)
  • Cable Termination and Connection — Learners terminate medium voltage cables with stress cones and lugs, connect to transformer bushings, and verify continuity and phase rotation. (3h)
  • Grounding and Bonding Installation — Learners install ground grid connections, bond transformer tank to ground, and test ground resistance with a ground tester. (2h)
  • Pre-Commissioning Testing and Troubleshooting — Learners perform winding resistance, turns ratio, and insulation tests; interpret results; simulate common faults and apply corrective actions. (3h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
