Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Incremental Launching Method (ILM)

Objectives:
• Understand the basic principles and history of incremental launching. • Identify the advantages and limitations of ILM compared to other bridge construction methods. • Recognise typical applications and project types suitable for ILM. • Describe the key components of an incrementally launched bridge. • Outline the general sequence of construction activities in ILM.

Topics:
• Overview of bridge construction methods. • Definition and evolution of incremental launching. • Suitability criteria for ILM (span length, geometry, site constraints). • Key components: launching girder, temporary supports, launching nose. • Step-by-step construction sequence. • Case studies of notable ILM projects.

Day 2: Structural Design Principles for ILM

Objectives:
• Explain the structural behaviour of a bridge during launching. • Calculate design loads and stress distributions specific to ILM. • Understand the role of the launching nose and its design. • Analyse temporary support conditions and their impact on design. • Apply design codes and standards relevant to ILM (e.g., SANS 10160).

Topics:
• Load cases during launching (self-weight, launching forces, wind). • Stress analysis at critical sections (hogging, sagging). • Design of launching nose (length, stiffness, connection). • Temporary support design (piers, abutments, launching shoe). • Use of prestressing during construction. • Design for stability and buckling. • Relevant SANS and EN code provisions.

Day 3: Launching Equipment and Systems

Objectives:
• Identify different types of launching equipment and their functions. • Understand the operation of hydraulic jacks, strand jacks, and winches. • Describe the role of the launching shoe and sliding surfaces. • Evaluate equipment selection criteria based on project requirements. • Recognise safety features and operational limits of launching systems.

Topics:
• Types of launching systems: push, pull, and combined methods. • Hydraulic jacks: capacity, control, and synchronization. • Strand jacks and multi-strand systems. • Launching shoe design: sliding bearings, PTFE pads, lubrication. • Temporary launching girders and trusses. • Monitoring and control systems (load cells, displacement sensors). • Equipment maintenance and safety protocols.

Day 4: Construction Planning and Site Preparation

Objectives:
• Develop a construction sequence plan for an ILM project. • Plan site layout including casting yard, launching area, and storage. • Coordinate with temporary works design and installation. • Understand quality control measures for precast segments. • Prepare risk assessments and mitigation strategies for launching operations.

Topics:
• Construction sequence planning: segment casting, curing, launching. • Casting yard layout: segment production line, storage, handling. • Temporary works: foundations, falsework, launching girder erection. • Quality control: segment geometry, concrete strength, prestressing ducts. • Risk assessment: wind, misalignment, jack failure. • Contingency planning for launching interruptions. • Site safety and traffic management.

Day 5: Launching Operations and Control

Objectives:
• Execute the launching process step-by-step. • Monitor and adjust alignment and elevation during launching. • Apply correction methods for deviations. • Coordinate team roles and communication during launching. • Document launch progress and record data for quality assurance.

Topics:
• Launching procedure: preparation, initial movement, continuous launching. • Alignment control: laser, total station, GPS monitoring. • Elevation control: jacking and shimming adjustments. • Correction techniques: vertical and horizontal alignment. • Communication protocols between control room and field crew. • Data logging and documentation. • Troubleshooting common issues (binding, cracking, misalignment).

Day 6: Post-Launching Activities and Completion

Objectives:
• Understand the procedures for final positioning and locking of the bridge. • Describe the installation of permanent bearings and expansion joints. • Manage the removal of temporary works and launching equipment. • Perform final alignment checks and adjustments. • Plan for finishing works such as deck surfacing and parapets.

Topics:
• Final positioning: jacking to final bearing level, locking. • Bearing installation: types, grouting, load transfer. • Expansion joint installation and waterproofing. • Removal of launching nose and temporary supports. • Final alignment survey and correction. • Deck finishing: asphalt, waterproofing, drainage. • Parapet and barrier installation. • Handover documentation and as-built records.

Day 7: Quality Assurance, Safety, and Case Studies

Objectives:
• Apply quality assurance and control procedures throughout ILM. • Identify key safety hazards and implement controls. • Analyse real-world case studies to learn from successes and failures. • Integrate lessons learned into future project planning. • Prepare a comprehensive project report covering all phases of ILM.

Topics:
• QA/QC plan: inspection checkpoints, testing (concrete, steel). • Safety management: risk assessment, PPE, emergency response. • Case study 1: Successful ILM project (e.g., Gautrain bridge). • Case study 2: Lessons from failure (e.g., alignment error or collapse). • Group exercise: critique a case study and propose improvements. • Final assessment: written test or practical exercise. • Course wrap-up and Q&A.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
