SAQA US 110451 | NQF 2 | Credits 5 | Duration 2 Days
From $832 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to safely and effectively maintain batteries used in automatic scrubber driers and auto sweepers. Participants will learn to identify battery types, perform routine maintenance, and handle batteries in compliance with health and safety regulations.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge of battery types, components, and principles of operation for automatic scrubber driers and auto sweepers.
  • Apply safety procedures and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements when handling and maintaining batteries.
  • Perform routine battery maintenance tasks including cleaning, watering, and equalizing charges.
  • Analyze battery condition using voltage readings, hydrometer tests, and visual inspections.
  • Evaluate and implement proper charging procedures and storage practices to extend battery life.
  • Comply with environmental regulations for battery disposal and spill management.

Target Audience

This course is designed for cleaning supervisors, maintenance technicians, and operators responsible for the upkeep of automatic scrubber driers and auto sweepers in industrial or commercial settings.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Battery Technology and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the fundamental principles of battery operation and types used in scrubber driers and auto sweepers.
• Identify safety hazards and apply personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
• Perform pre-use inspections and routine maintenance checks.
• Interpret manufacturer specifications and battery ratings.

Topics:
• Overview of battery types: lead-acid, gel, AGM, and lithium-ion.
• Basic battery chemistry and how batteries store and deliver energy.
• Safety protocols: handling acid, preventing short circuits, ventilation.
• PPE requirements: gloves, goggles, aprons, acid-resistant footwear.
• Pre-use inspection: visual checks, terminal condition, electrolyte levels.
• Routine maintenance: cleaning terminals, checking water levels, equalisation charging.
• Understanding battery ratings: voltage, amp-hour (Ah), cold cranking amps (CCA).
• Manufacturer guidelines and documentation.

Day 2: Advanced Maintenance, Troubleshooting and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Execute proper charging procedures and maintain charging equipment.
• Troubleshoot common battery faults and performance issues.
• Perform battery testing using hydrometers, multimeters, and load testers.
• Apply safe removal, installation, and disposal procedures.

Topics:
• Charging procedures: constant voltage, constant current, and smart chargers.
• Charging equipment maintenance: cables, connectors, and charger settings.
• Troubleshooting: sulfation, overcharging, undercharging, and cell failure.
• Battery testing: specific gravity (hydrometer), open circuit voltage (multimeter), load testing.
• Battery removal and installation: safety steps, terminal connections, and torque specifications.
• Disposal and recycling regulations: environmental compliance and waste management.
• Record keeping: maintenance logs, battery history, and performance tracking.
• Integration with machine operation: impact on run time and productivity.

Practicals

6 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practical sessions reinforce theoretical knowledge through supervised practice on actual scrubber drier and auto sweeper batteries. Learners perform safety checks, maintenance tasks, testing procedures, and troubleshooting exercises to build competence.

Practical Activities
  • Safety and Pre-Use Inspection — Learners don PPE, conduct a visual inspection of a battery, check electrolyte levels, and clean terminals under supervision. (1h)
  • Routine Maintenance and Charging — Learners perform equalisation charging, monitor charging parameters, and maintain charging equipment as per manufacturer guidelines. (2h)
  • Battery Testing and Diagnostics — Learners use a hydrometer, multimeter, and load tester to assess battery health and diagnose common faults. (2h)
  • Battery Removal, Installation, and Disposal — Learners safely remove a battery from a machine, install a replacement, and demonstrate correct disposal procedures. (1h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
