Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Commercial Industrial Cleaning Chemicals

Objectives:
• Define commercial industrial cleaning chemicals and their role in various industries
• Identify key regulatory frameworks (SANS, OHSA, SAQA) governing chemical use
• Recognise common chemical hazards and basic safety protocols
• Explain the importance of correct chemical selection for specific cleaning tasks
• Outline the course structure and assessment criteria

• Overview of the cleaning chemicals industry in South Africa
• Classification of industrial cleaning chemicals (alkalis, acids, solvents, surfactants, enzymes)
• Regulatory compliance: SANS 10047, OHSA, NEMA, SAQA Unit Standard 110459
• Basic hazard identification: GHS pictograms, Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
• Principles of cleaning: soil types, surface compatibility, dilution ratios
• Introduction to personal protective equipment (PPE) and first aid
• Course objectives, assessment methods, and learner expectations

Day 2: Chemical Composition and Formulation Principles

Objectives:
• Describe the chemistry behind common industrial cleaning agents
• Differentiate between active ingredients, additives, and carriers
• Explain pH, concentration, and temperature effects on cleaning efficacy
• Interpret product labels and technical data sheets accurately
• Apply simple calculations for dilution and mixing

• Chemistry fundamentals: acids, bases, pH scale, surfactants, chelating agents
• Formulation components: builders, solvents, sequestrants, fragrances
• Understanding concentration: weight/volume, percentage, parts per million (ppm)
• Factors affecting performance: temperature, contact time, mechanical action
• Interpreting technical documentation: SDS, product data sheets, batch certificates
• Practical calculations: dilution ratios, cost per use, active content

Day 3: Health, Safety, and Environmental Management

Objectives:
• Identify health risks associated with chemical exposure (acute and chronic)
• Apply risk assessment methodologies for chemical handling
• Implement spill response and waste disposal procedures
• Understand environmental impact and sustainability initiatives
• Demonstrate correct use of PPE and emergency equipment

Topics:
• Toxicology: routes of exposure, dose-response, occupational exposure limits (OELs)
• Risk assessment: HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment) process
• Spill containment and clean-up procedures (including neutralisation)
• Waste management: classification, storage, disposal according to NEM:WA
• Safety equipment: eyewash stations, safety showers, fire extinguishers
• Environmental stewardship: green chemistry, biodegradable formulations, reduced packaging
• Emergency response: first aid, medical surveillance, incident reporting

Day 4: Application Techniques and Equipment

Objectives:
• Select appropriate application methods for different cleaning scenarios
• Operate common dispensing and application equipment correctly
• Calibrate dosing systems to ensure accurate dilution
• Conduct pre- and post-application inspections
• Troubleshoot common equipment malfunctions

• Mechanical application: foamers, scrubbers, pressure washers, automated systems
• Dispensing equipment: proportioners, dosing pumps, central systems

Day 5: Sector-Specific Applications and Best Practices

• Tailor chemical selection and application to specific industries (food, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing)
• Apply cleaning protocols compliant with industry standards (e.g., HACCP, infection control)
• Evaluate surface compatibility and material resistance
• Optimise cleaning schedules for efficiency and cost-effectiveness
• Document procedures and maintain records

• Food industry: CIP (Clean-in-Place), degreasers, sanitisers, HACCP compliance
• Healthcare: disinfectants, sterilants, blood spill management, infection prevention
• Hospitality: multi-surface cleaners, laundry chemicals, floor care
• Manufacturing: heavy-duty degreasers, metal cleaners, solvent alternatives
• Surface compatibility: stainless steel, aluminium, plastics, painted surfaces, glass
• Developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and cleaning schedules
• Record-keeping: chemical usage logs, batch records, maintenance logs

Day 6: Quality Control, Troubleshooting, and Continuous Improvement

• Implement quality control checks for chemical performance
• Diagnose and resolve common cleaning problems (streaking, residue, corrosion)
• Apply root cause analysis to recurring issues
• Recommend improvements to cleaning processes
• Evaluate new products and technologies

Day 7: Assessment, Integration, and Certification Preparation

• Complete a comprehensive written and practical assessment
• Demonstrate competence in advising clients on chemical selection and use
• Prepare for SAQA Unit Standard 110459 assessment
• Create a personal action plan for professional development

Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are essential for learners to safely handle chemicals, operate dispensing and application equipment, and apply correct dilution and cleaning techniques. These sessions reinforce theoretical knowledge and develop the psychomotor skills required for competent advisory work.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Chemical Identification and Safety — Learners identify chemicals from labels and SDS, select appropriate PPE, and simulate spill response procedures. (4h)
  • Practical 2: Dilution and Dosing Calculations — Learners prepare accurate dilutions using manual and automatic dosing equipment, verifying concentrations with test kits. (4h)
  • Practical 3: Application Equipment Operation — Learners operate foamers, pressure washers, and automatic scrubbers, adjusting settings for different surfaces and chemicals. (5h)
  • Practical 4: Sector-Specific Cleaning Simulations — Learners simulate cleaning scenarios in food processing (CIP), healthcare (disinfection), and manufacturing (degreasing) environments. (5h)
  • Practical 5: Advisory Role-Play and Assessment — Learners conduct a mock client consultation, assess a cleaning problem, recommend chemicals and procedures, and present a written report. (3h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
